Muslim call to prayer to sound at Duke University

Members of the Duke Muslim Students Association will chant the call, known as adhan or azan, from the Duke Chapel bell tower each Friday at 1 p.m. The call to prayer will last about three minutes and be “moderately amplified,” officials said in a statement Tuesday.

“The adhan is the call to prayer that brings Muslims back to their purpose in life, which is to worship God, and serves as a reminder to serve our brothers and sisters in humanity,” said Imam Adeel Zeb, Muslim chaplain at Duke. “The collective Muslim community is truly grateful and excited about Duke’s intentionality toward religious and cultural diversity.”

In majority Muslim countries across the globe, the adhan is broadcast from mosques and on television and radio stations five times a day to correspond with prayer times. On Fridays, the day of worship in Islam, sermons are also broadcast.

In the United States, amplified adhan exists in a handful of communities.

“This opportunity represents a larger commitment to religious pluralism that is at the heart of Duke’s mission,” said Christy Lohr Sapp, the chapel’s associate dean for religious life. “It connects the university to national trends in religious accommodation.”

question so a university is allowing a group to promote one religion as they symmetrically shut down any mention of another
Would Duke University allow a Nativity scene be displayed on official school grounds, how about a menorah word they allow Hymns being song and broadcasted from the Duke Chapel bell tower on Sunday morning?
how is this acceptable do they not see the hypocrisy in their decision
next question are we going to see the same atheist groups make a big stink over this as the do with anything Christian?

Is Duke a private university? If so, then they can quite literally do anything they want. If it is public, then the separation of church and state must be adhered to. There are thousands of schools that celebrate 'religious diversity' by allowing multiple religious items placed in schools. They believe it is okay because they are including multiple religions but in reality are just multiplying their disobedience to the idea of a secular society.

Personal opinion: religion should be disallowed from public schools as is very clearly stated.

If you cannot keep track of your own prayer time you cannot be a very good muslim.

Duke is a private university which makes it no different than the ten thousand private colleges out there who allow the same for their students.

You mean like every religion that's allowed there?

    Also, this article on it:

"Basically, you have people who live in a state that opens government meetings, public school athletic events, graduations, stock car races, rodeos, and (I am not making this up) chili cook-offs with prayers that end in “In Jesus’ name we pray” — getting bent out of shape about a three minute call to prayer. Why? Because people are saying it’s “being forced upon them.” Apologies if you just spit coffee on your screen. Take a moment to clean that up.

Why is it okay to force Muslims, Jews, and other religiously affiliated and nonaffiliated citizens to listen to “In Jesus’ name we pray” every time they want to watch a high school football game or attend a city council meeting — but you can’t sit respectfully for three minutes every Friday?"

Or this Christian group, that has meetings weekly, along with music that is guaranteed to be heard outside their room?

Or how about this, where there was a prayer walk across campus?

Your persecution complex is cute, but, as always, in your own mind.

These points are all really simply countered, you see the countries in the west are all Christian countries, many different forms but still Christian in which Jesus Christ is worshipped as the son of God, we have EVERY RIGHT to exert this because guess what? It's our countries. You have your own religious rights in countries which don't follow Christianity as ''main'' religion.

I think there is actually some sort of Japanese penis deity. It would be pretty awesome if the way to worship the penis god is by watching porn and get a weekly showing of porn on campus. Someone should look into this.

Actually, if you want to be like that, christianity is a eastern european concept that was forced on britain, that was then forced on the americas.

And "your country" (i live in america, so you're pretty cute with that too) was founded on the idea that the government does not have a religion. It's secular. Meaning... you can worship whatever the fuck you want. There is no main religion in that sense, except in those that are threatened by another religion. Those people are more likely to be judged by god by your own bible, as the mandate is to NOT judge people, to NOT hurt people, and let them make their own choices.

But we're not talking religion, because that gets nasty and will get this thread locked in seconds. We're talking about a college allowing diversity and people angry about that.

    Each to their own.

    I respect their faith.

Gave up my seat on the bus home from Glasgow because a guy wanted to pray. Needed to travel in the backwards seat so he could face east.

You have to accept all equally or accept none equally. Lack of faith being one of the ones to accept.

Anything else is bigotry of one form or another.

It's not even an eastern European concept as it was forced on them too!
