So was the cheerleader in on it? The article isn't very informative.
Also seeing anybody get hit with a basketball in the face is funny. Man or woman.
Goddamn, not everything is about a man trying to hurt a woman in the feminist sense of KEEPIN DEM IN DERE RIGHTFUL PLACE.
Not that I think you're saying that, but I'm sure, give this thread 20 minutes, and there will be.
While I realize you're being tounge-in-cheek here, I'm going to go ahead and do my best to nip the inevitable shitstorm in the bud by expressing my belief that the heart of this joke lies not in him hitting a woman, but in the fact that seeing anyone get hit by a basketball in the face is oddly comedic.

Yes, I gathered that. My point is still if the cheerleader was an actress in the movie who was in on it.
Or if the cheerleaders and the stadium knew nothing about it whatsoever and only thought he'd throw a free-throw.
I'm leaning toward her being in on it, because the movie kind of needs permission of the person to show their face in the movie.
I don't know how offended I should be.
Give me a moment to consult the geniuses.

When something like that happens by accident (or is staged) it's pretty funny, even if it's not appropriate to laugh. Due to the lack of decent journalism in the OP link I will go with the assumption that it was either staged (with the cheerleader in question in on it) or something went horribly wrong. If Ferrel just decided on the spur of the moment that it would be funny to throw a basketball, at short range, with as much power as he could, into a random person's face, that is assault.
When something like this is done deliberately it's not funny at all. Especially if the person throwing the ball is bigger and stronger than the person getting hit by the ball. The reason this often becomes a gender issue is that on average women are physically significantly smaller and weaker than men. It's no different to why a 12th grader bullying a 7th grader is not cool.
I knew who the OP was before I opened the thread!

Yeah, not sure I agree with you there. It's fine when you know it's an act, but I have just seen far too many real life injuries that, while they would have made for great comic effect in a television show or movie, in real life result in someone getting seriously injured. The incident in which Phillip Hughes (Australian Test Cricketer) was recently killed after being hit on the head with a cricket ball is rather sobering in that regard.
In the past this wasn't really an issue. People could distinguish a lot better between reality and entertainment because "reality television" wasn't the big thing it is today. In the past television was mostly fiction, but today it's easy to forget that real life =/= tv.
For example: Watching the scene on Zoolander where the male models immolate themselves by lighting a cigarette after having a playful "gasoline fight" is hilarious. But seeing such an incident happen in real life would be horrific. Yet there are people who seem to think that if it's recorded and put on Youtube it's suddenly funny? It's not. It's still horrific and the fact that some people will find it amusing makes it even more so.

You're comparing somebody getting hit in the face with a basketball (Not sure why you brought up cricket balls, which are way different) to the scene in Zoolander where the idiots kill themselves with a gasoline fight?
Mmm.
You went on a bit of a tangent against a bunch of horrible things I never even said. Its not like there's only one category or degree of injuries somebody can get. And they're all included from "Sore/broken nose for a day" up to and including "death by any mean possible."
Jeeze.
