Thread: Build Advice!

    Question Build Advice!

Hi, this is going to be the first build that I have done in several years. I have compiled a list of mixed and matched parts generally from the last MMOC Puppy and Dolphin builds. I have nailed my budget and I am just looking for some general insight on the build and any opinions as to whether anything has changed as far as finding a better price and better components. I plan on adding some type of SSD in the future when I get a bit more money. I look to play WoW the most (obviously) and get into some of the newer games that I haven't been able to play on my laptop (i7, gt540m). I will be watching this thread for replies, and would appreciate the thought and input. Thank you!

I am unable to post links, as I am a new poster, so I will list the models and prices. All which I have found through Amazon.com.

    1. Case Cooler Master HAF 912 $68.68
    2. PSU EVGA 600B 80PLUS 600w $54.99
    3. CPU AMD FX-6300 $99.99
    4. Heatsink Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO $34.99
    5. Mobo Asus M5A97 $84.99
    6. RAM G.Skill 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz Ripjaws $77.74

Nothing really wrong with any of the components you listed but ill make a few suggestions:

-Case is really really old, not that cases date like other components in a system but that one in particular does not have things like dust filters, USB 3.0 ports, side panel window etc. For a little more money you can get a proper case that is 10x better built and will last a lot longer with all the functionality listed above of a properly designed case in 2015:

-If your main game is WoW, you really should stick to intel CPU's as they outperform AMD by multitudes of percentiles on MMO's especially. You dont have the budget for an i5 system so im gonna suggest these parts:
    http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i3-4150-...sin=B00J2LIF2S

I went with a full size z97 board for a couple reasons, it wont look silly inside that case, and it has proper audio chipset (you can get z97 motherboards for 20 bucks cheaper, but they dont have as much expansion capability and lesser audio). With a z97 motherboard you have the option to upgrade to an overclockable i5 or i7 down the road.

-Video card, i am an admittedly nvidia fanboy as i have had such great luck with the products and ease of driver installs. A 270x for 155 bucks is a really good price and i cannot link you an nvidia card that will match that for the money, i will just say from my 10 years of WoW ive had multiple cards throughout that time and never had a problem with an nvidia card or driver (never even had a driver crash error). I found you a gtx 650ti boost which is actually faster than a gtx 750ti for 119.00 refurb:

-Monitor. Im sure thats a fine monitor but you can save money here as well:

With the changes i made you can actually scratch the cpu cooler off your list, a stock heatsink is fine for an i3 saving you another 35 bucks. Rest of your parts looks just fine to me. Dont get me wrong you CAN still get the CPU cooler if you like, it will be slightly quieter and of course keep your i3 cooler, but its definitely not a necessity with a haswell i3.

Wow guys, thanks. I have taken all this into consideration and will probably stick to an intel CPU and Nvidia card. I'm a GeForce fan too but I was unaware of being able to get such a decent card for such a little price. I was even considering a new haswell i5 4670k because I can let go of a couple hundred more dollars now that I think about it. I'm unsure about the i3, I want to squeeze as much gaming life out of this build that I can and I'm also a little unsure about if it would bottleneck the video card or not. I guess I'll go find some benchmarks on that i3 and it's a decent CPU I wouldn't mind rolling with it. Also, would that 450W PSU be enough for that GTX 960 in that build? I'll do some more research. Appreciate the input and you guys made some very fine suggestions. I like that you were able to include a SSD in the sub $800 budget Kos.

EDIT - After doing some research I think I will take both of your suggestions in and go with the build that Kos listed. Seems right on the money for me. Thanks again.

Without overclocking an i5 you will get similar FPS in WoW with an i3. Its completely up to you on how much money you wanna spend, but if you arent overclocking an i3 is just as future proof as an i5 because it has hyperthreading which games see as the same as 4 cores on the i5. One caveat is a very few number of games play better with more l3 cache, which an i5 has more of.

Here's my AMD build. With WoW it won't be better then an i3, but newer games will play better. Some modern games had some trouble with i3's due to dual core. My advice is either get an AMD 8 core CPU or go straight for an i5.
