Possible Huge Business Oportunity, Oculus Rift

Was watching this Oculus Rift vid. The lady had a plumbing problem with her toilet, she contacted a tech over the phone and the tech was able to put a virtual display over the plumbing components and walked her trough the repair. He demonstrated what to do virtually and she was able to copy his actions.

Wow! This is going to be big. Imagine doctors helping out an EMT on the battlefield or a chef walking you through making a chocolate mousse.

That's Microsoft Hololens, not oculus rift
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes
    All lookouts clapped on Paradise
All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

That was all marketing bs. I only belive this if they actually release at least one application that actually let's you do that. There is a pletheora of reasons why this won't be that simple, starting with that your interface is 2d wheres the target is a 3d space. It all hinges on someone being able to write proper software for it, which remains to be seen. Also what Reeve said.

If it actually works as the hype video suggests. Gotta remember that a lot of times these videos will greatly exaggerate the capabilities of the product in order to generate excitement and move units and there's no guarantee at this stage that it is exactly what it appears to be. The potential is amazing, yes, but I'm a little too jaded to believe it will actually live up to that potential.

Remember the early 90s and the excitement over VR and how it would change the world? All these years later and we're still waiting; at best, we're a step closer thanks to Oculus Rift.

Yep, Microsoft Hololens. I was wrong.

Looks like Microsoft is still in the game.

Besides, why would a plumber want to learn his customers what to do? No one does that, you're learning away your trade and thus making you and your job redundant after you're done explaining stuff to your customer.

That's cool but some people just want to pay for someone to do it for them.

My first thought when I watched the video was of being in the middle of something terribly important and then you get the dreaded BSOD.

    Well, that and

That's just an example. Like the other day I was adjusting the derailleur on my bike. If I had this service I could've got a VR video to show me how, maybe even an expert to help me.

I watched some youtubes but this would be much better.

You tube DiY videos are good enough for me, I don't need my hand held through the entire process.

Okay, how about hiring a sex expert to help you give your girl an orgasm?

Are you serious? You realize to actually help you they'd have to see it, then draw something on the image... I think alot of people have "issues" with this kind of process, if they'd let you stream their genitals you might as well ask them where it feels good or watch an educational video on it. Those already exist on the internet.

I didn't watch the video. I reacted to this:

I would want a whole team, like the guys in Houston who talked Apollo 13 down.

When these VR toys do come out, I'm betting it'll be like the Virtual Boy 2.0 and we'll all forget about it in a few years :/.
The caged bird sings /with a fearful trill /of things unknown /but longed for still /and his tune is heard /on the distant hill /for the caged bird/ sings of freedom.

I'd call this a retcon. The guy was laying back in his armchain or couch, was definitely elderly and explained it to a young women. They probably called it a plumber, because they realized that the message here was not PC enough.
