NYPD unveiling new 350 man anti terrorist squad.

The NYPD will launch a unit of 350 cops to handle both counterterrorism and protests — riding vehicles equipped with machine guns and riot gear — under a re-engineering plan to be rolled out over the coming months.

The Strategic Response Group, or SRG, will be devoted to “advanced disorder control and counterterrorism protection,” responding to the sort of demonstrations that erupted after the Eric Garner grand jury decision and also events like the recent Paris terror attacks.

“It will be equipped and trained in ways that our normal patrol officers are not,” Commissioner Bill Bratton said Thursday.
“It will be equipped with all the extra heavy protective gear, with the long rifles and the machine guns that are unfortunately sometimes necessary in these *instances.” http://nypost.com/2015/01/30/nypd-to...rrorism-squad/

Vehicles equipped with machine guns to shoot terrorists? Isn't this what our military is for or the national guard?

I wonder if that' their entire job or they do regular police work and this in addition? A lot of SWAT teams are like that.

The only sources on this I'm finding is from that tabloid and Reddit, so I'm not trusting this story.

This is kind of silly even going by Russian police standards. And we have tanks just driving around wherever they want out in Siberia.

Good question. Here's the answer (from the article) The department will do away with the current system that pulls cops off regular assignments to provide a beefed-up presence at certain hot spots in “critical incident” vehicles.

    How is this fake? http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/ad...sm_units.shtml

I find the timing of this comical considering it's been 14 years since 9/11. Why all of a sudden?

Let's stop pretending and just get the military in instead, because that's what these fuckers want.

I'm already freaked out when I see National Guard soldiers patrolling 42nd Street (port authority bus station)...And there are usually heavily armed cops (mp5's and shotguns) standing outside and on the streets near the building. Now we have an elite military-but not really military- unit that specializes in counter-terrorism....being used on protests? And these fuckers are going to riding around in APC's...

Just insane but this is what you get when you look to create a police state. And trust me if you have it it will get used

The mayor of NYC doesn't have control over the military. This seems like the unfortunate, but unavoidable, result of escalation. The SWAT team isn't enough anymore.

The SWAT team isn't enough for what? When was the last battle in the streets of NYC with terrorists? As far as I can recall, the last terrorist attack in NYC was 9/11 and there's damn near nothing that some fancy machine guns could have done about that. Pretty sure that there aren't car bombs going off, there aren't suicide attacks, there isn't anything in the country that would be cause for this sort of "escalation".

For encouraging those uppity protesters with crazy ideas about "police responsibility" and "reasonable usage of force" to shut up and get back in line.
