That would never happen, these are trained professionals. It's impossible for them to make mistakes, they go through vigorous training. /sarcasm

According the manufacturer you can be in the beam for 250 seconds before it damages your skin. Only takes 3 to lose eye sight. Well yeah imagine a riot or angry protest. let's say you walk forward 2 steps to move out of beam but the crowd shoves you down and you get trampled.

All you have to do is give a vague appearance to refuse what they ask and all that training goes out the window.

I don't disagree with the "anti terror" part, but i think it is kind of pointless since we already have the FBI and homeland security to cover anti terrorist measures, it seems like this is just a strain in the NYC budget that could go somewhere else.

Yes, Fine. It's about machine-gunning protesters. You win.

Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio, the mayor of one of the strongest liberal bastions in the country, the guy who was called a tax-the-rich liberal, the guy who was elected by huge margins in the African-American, Latino, and women demographics, the one who ran against the stop-and-frisk policy (and the NYPD hated that he did that by the way), the one whose trying to get ID cards for homeless people, the one trying to ban god damn horse-drawn carriages because they're cruel to the horses, the one who had talks with his non-white child about being careful around the police (and the NYPD hated that he did that by the way), and the guy who had police officers turn their backs on him during a funeral because he hadn't called for enough response after two cops were gunned down, woke up one day and said "Hey! You know what would be grand? To run a military-style police state where I get to use machine guns on protesters! You there, guy who ran the police under Giulliani, you know, probably the only person in the country that knows how to deal with a terrorist attack in NYC! Make a police unit for machine-gunning protesters, and be sure to say something fucking retarded in public about it!"

And just to be clear, because apparently that's a problem, I'm being sarcastic.

Do you have any idea how much of an about-face it would be for that man to suddenly decide he wanted to be a military dictator? Do you have any idea how ill-informed that makes you sound?

If you honestly think this guy, of all the heads of all the cities in the USA, is not only intentionally making a death squad to mow down unarmed civilians with military weaponry, but also having it announced blatantly as such in public, then I don't think we can have a rational discussion anymore.

Because saying you feel your black son would be unjustly profiled and teaching him to take extra precautions around police is somehow instigating a lone nut to commit a crime, good job on the connections there.

Not going to waste time with this guy more than i just have.

Its their fault for making anti Terrorism/Protest dual use units.

Srsly even against terrorist this is bullshit they dont come with a battalion.
Better send the right 5 man in instead of 350.

This is money burning and the only potentially is in getting abused.

And, of course, if by some tragedy someone is hurt, the courts will definitely hold those responsible accountable.

Mounted machine guns..?? What the fuck. What kind of terrorism are they expecting? 300 Terrorists armed with AK47 shooting down the 5th avenue? Did they watch too many movies? Like what the hell. This is war preparation. I'm pretty sure Terrorist plant bombs somewhere or shoot something up. How exactly does a mini army help against that?

    Even simplier :

How a ground army could have saved NY from 9/11 ?

Maybe they should have some combat helicopter and a jet squadron too. IMO 350 heavy armed officier isn't enough

How long until all the police resemble these 350 guys with machine guns and long rifles, honestly? 5 10 years? You know it's coming.

In my defense, "NYPD Requests Fighter Squadron to Protect Against Potential Terror Threats" is a headline that is all too believable.

Just looked up the average salary of a rookie cop in new york they make like 42k a year, guessing these guys will make slightly more so lets say 50k that only ends up being about 17.5 million a year(not counting equipment) and considering Nixx just linked an article stating the odds of an american dying to a terrorist attack foreign and domestic is 1 in 20 million, Id say this is a pretty good deal.

9/11 was a black swan event.

And what makes you think this squad will make any difference whatsoever? Terrorist plots are thwarted by intelligence, not more guns.
