Didn't the Italian courts also arrest a weatherman because people died in an earthquake? Despite the fact that earthquakes aren't meteorological phenomenon. Frankly, anything decided in an Italian court regarding science is really eye-rolling.

They just lived (roughly) in the same area. The people and the culture are vastly different. Also different religious influences after the Roman empire.

Italy is considered a flawed democracy. It's not the worst country out there but it's not the best either.
