Do you tip when you pick up food?

    Hello everyone,

I'm kinda stuck on this question, I generally tip if a service was involved such as dinning in or getting food delivered. But I'm wondering about what if I order to pick up food, do you think its worth tipping? Tips usually go to the waitress or delivery drivers, which non are involved when I pick up food, I mean they handle payments?

    What do you guys think?

No, I go pick it up because I would rather get out for a bit than tip someone extra. The price should be factored into what they charge already in this case.

Do you tip the guy who bags your groceries? Or the cashier? Or your garbage man? They all provide similar services, but nobody tips them. I don't even think you CAN.

Granted, I can't remember the last time I "picked up". I always get delivery as far as that goes, and I do tip the driver.

I hate tipping in general... they get paid by the hour to DO THE JOB.. Why do they need extra?

Do you tip the checkout person in walmart / tesco / asda? Nope..

If it's the first time visiting a place? Sometimes, so I don't look like an asshole.

If I regularly get pickup there? Yes, because I'm doing so as a compliment to their food.

If I get there once in a while or am visiting a place I don't give two damns about? No.

I'm sort of 50/50 on it.

I can tell you that when I used to work at a restaurant back in the day, togo orders were a much larger pain in the butt to deal with than eat-in orders. They took more work on my part.

Not usually, unless they do something above and beyond what's required.

No. Tipping is flawed as is with the myth that "waitresses don't get paid minimum wage". There is no reason to tip for picking up food. Who would you even tip?

How did togo orders require more work?

How did togo orders require more work?
First, you had to have someone who wasn't at the front dealing with customers stop to take the order on the phone. This kept them from doing something else they needed to be doing. Orders would back up, and it would begin to upset the dining room if you had enough of these at once. Then, when the food came out, there was additional prep-work that would have to be done to bag it up and make it ready, and additional checking to ensure everything was properly in there, since if you miss something, it's not a quick run back to the kitchen to grab it. Once bagged, those bags had to take up valuable counter space until the customer arrived. Finally, once the customer arrived, you again had to take someone away from their normal job to stop and take the togo orderer's money. If there were 3 people at once wanting to pay for their order and 2 phone calls asking for new orders, it could severely hamper the efficiency of getting the food out to the customers.

It was just another thing to have to manage that extra to the general system of the establishment. Could we handle it? Yes. But it was extra work.

Honestly, that doesn't really strike me as harder / extra.

Well then you clearly didn't work in my restaurant. It was disruptive to the normal flow of operation. It was a manageable disruption most of the time, but that doesn't mean it wasn't extra work.

It all depends on the place. Huge chain places I usually don't. There's this little family run Italian place just down the street that goes the extra mile if asked and always has extra large portions of food. I usually tip them even if I am picking it up.

No, and I absolutely won't tip either on the rare occasions when I get coffee or something and there's a giant tip jar there. If you're a delivery driver I'll tip you well, because you don't get paid minimum wage and you provide a service that goes above and beyond the cost of my food. If you're a waitress/waiter and I eat in I'll tip for obvious reasons. Otherwise people begging for tips with tip jars can get fucked. It's obnoxious.

The question of whether you tip when you pick up food is actually a new twist, compared to the "do you tip delivery drivers?" threads we get here frequently.

Do you tip when you get drive through? Or when you order your burger meal at the counter? It's pretty much the same thing. People assembling food, wrapping it and handing to you. Why should one get a tip and the not the other?

No, unless it was a restaurant I frequented and happen to enjoy. But who would I tip? There was no waiter/waitress.

This question was gone over in every single "do you tip" thread. It's not a new twist.
