Metzen's departure was another bad sign, both for the possibility of a sequel and the perceived value of the Warcraft IP going forward.

To add to the numbers: the movie grossed $15.9M from domestic DVD/Blu-Ray sales.

The graph on this page of box office over time shows the movie had very poor "legs":

I have a feeling his departure was tied in some way to how poorly the movie showed and in turn he probably sees no way for his baby to get a sequel. A number of the times I'd have loved to been a fly on the wall in some of those conversations before the movie and after when metzen was involved.
The good thing for him is he gets paid no matter how the movie does or at least that's how it works for most involved in the writing. He made out like a bandit, movie flopped and not long after he leaves blizz. I'd love to know some of those inside details.
I can pretty much guarantee you that you will never get a closer adaptation of Warcraft 1 than this movie.
It's really difficult to adapt a video game, particularly an RTS, even if you don't take into account the fact that the game's lore has been retconned to the point of being unrecogniseable by Warcraft III and WoW.
