Where to get cheap but decent instruments

I'm considering picking up an instrument, likely either a ukelele or a violin. I played violin when I was much younger, and don't remember any of it. A ukelele seems to be easy to pick up, as my father did that about two years ago and can play fantastically now.

However, I don't want to drop a huge chunk of change on something that may either be a passing fancy (or I might just suck at). I know I can get a Uke for $100 at guitar center, I believe, but I imagine violins are more expensive. Is there a place online that sells decent but cheap instruments? I'm not looking to be professional, or anything, more just 'picking up a skill'.

If you were in Europe I'd say thomann.de, I don't know if they deliver to USA.

If you have pawn shops in your area they're always worth checking out.

Musiciansfriend.com is usually where I go for that kind of thing. I bought my first guitar there. Your best bet is usually to go for one of those "starter packs" for your chosen instrument. Those packs usually include things like a beginner's guide, extra picks/strings/whatever else, etc. Basically everything you need to get started. One of those for a cheap violin will run you like $100-$150.

eBay is actually not bad for stuff like that either.
