Animated portraits in game - tweet devs quick

so, until we can actually get convo scenes that has the camera rotate round to see your character's face and expressions..

i think they should have an option for animated portraits like in the old warcraft games.

Your player portrait in game is basically a camera fixed on your face - and you will see all the character expressions when doing all the different things, it would be dynamic, and you can resize it. It is optional btw, so if you reckon you can't handle it or it's too much for your system, you can turn back to static portraits.

or is their an app/add-on for this already?

    e.g:
Your portrait show's your characters face as it is.. do a /clap you will see it on your character and the portrai will show his face
Casting? The portrait will show the character's expression, mapping whatever you're doing.

    ***EDIT ADDITIONS***
    Other Caveats include
    • instead of emoticons appearing in chat when you do things like , they should have a portrait of your character smiling, and always doing things like should have your character smile, with an emote saying <<character name>> smiles.
    • The ability to set your expression especially in idle mode. This is your default expression, you can change from smile, to frown, to moody etc etc to a whole range of expressions. Simply /setexpression or /setface and that would be your characters expression till you change it.
    • Further - /smiling , /frowning etc at an NPC would automatically trigger the same emote on his face for about 5-10secs before it returns to the default expression. That could be fun

Pitbull has this built in. Many other unit frames do this too.

Elvui and Xperl are examples that have option to make 3d portraits, with elvui you can even rotate and zoomin zoom out on faces.

are they just 3d portraits? or do they actually show you your face live - i mean some of the expressions are awesome, e.g. headache casting, my worse casting animaiton on the night elf male, has one of the best casting expressions funnily enough the way he bows his head and they changed his expression to be looking intently at the target, it's really awesome ..unfortuantley you never see that, you just see those horribly vibrating hands that from a different angle especially the back, looks awful.. but yeah, been able to see your characters' face during actions, emotes and animations from the portrait would be so cool.

there must be a functionality for this.

They just play the default idle animation. I'm sure a coder could rig it to be a "live" portrait, or to cycle through random animations, but afaik there isn't one that does that yet.

Nope -- that information isn't actually available to addons. Blizzard would have to make it possible. (Which would be nice. Somebody twitter them about it, because that seems to be the blessed path to doing it these days.)

Really? I figured it could be programmed in to just be a crop of your model's face, no matter what it's doing. That's good to know.

I know ElvUI currently uses a large 3D model that plays random animations on their AFK screen. Something like that, at least, would be doable.

that's what I thought, it definitely isn't hard, and it would be pretty good, take full advantage of having new models and seeing your face in a game that has almost zero front on views of your character.

Hmm. I don't know LUA or wow addon API, but I'd imagine that, someone with enough time, could potentially make an addon that scans the combat log looking for START_CASTING/STOP_CASTING/etc events and plays animations based on that.

that's actually quite an interesting idea, not sure it would work though, in addition they could do so for every animation emote too. wanna try it.

quick question, anyone ever managed to change the focus target modifier to a different key other than alt/shit or Ctrl ? i wanted to switch to F, but can't

Would be awesome! Something like in Warcraft 3 or Starcraft 1 and 2 and in Heroes of the Storm. But not just idle animation, but something more: the character could be watching around, make some facial expressions, etc.

Unfortunately I didn't found animated gifs of portraits from War3 and HoTS, but I think everyone would know what's the matter. The size of the portrait could be bigger than usually is portrait in WoW, and animations could depend for example of class of our character.

You get the default idle animations, which those look like, if you just plop the same 3D model, dressed the same way, as your character in the frame. It's syncing up, eg, the lip motion when you /s something, or whatever, that is the challenge. (== requires information that Blizzard don't make available to addons, in some cases, and extreme programming like catching all emotes and mirroring them to the model in others.

yeah..can someone contact them about that?

was also thinking they could do little things like:

    • instead of emoticons appearing in chat when you do things like , they should have a portrait of your character smiling, and always doing things like should have your character smile, with an emote saying <<character name>> smiles.
    • The ability to set your expression especially in idle mode. This is your default expression, you can change from smile, to frown, to moody etc etc to a whole range of expressions. Simply /setexpression or /setface and that would be your characters expression till you change it.

    would be quite cute

    *amended OP with this addition.

raven -- they already do, eg, translate `lol` into a laugh, and animate you based on question vs statement vs yelling. just fyi

yeah, they do that, but i was referring to when you were typing in chat in a conversation, they can show emoticons, if they want to, I know some addons like ElvUI do, some don't whenever you do , but would be nice if it could be character /race gender specific icons based o your characters appearance - so it would use your characters hair colour example or it would instead take a miniture icon sized gif of you character doin a /smile and post it instead of the emoticon.

and this is why I want blizzard to allow a feature to set your expression on your characters face to any emotion

some of the best parts of the new models are barely experienced or never seen, you need things like animated portrait that is actually showing your characters face in real time, so you see his expressions on the portrait when you emote or when you animate during fighting or spell casting jumping or dying etc.

and yes, changing your expression from the default to reflect a mood would be awesome, excellent idea.

and being able to trigger an expression on an NPC would be great for laughs too.

You know they did said in an interview back in Cata that they were planning to add this. Whatever did happen?
