    Thinking About Starting

So I am thinking about playing FFXIV after thinking about it for a while now. My one concern is, if I do start playing am I going to be completely overloaded with information and have a hard time figuring things out or is it pretty easy to pick up? I've played WoW since 2008 and stopped recently in the past year due to getting bored of the game.

    Thanks

The game introduces you to new mechanics through the main scenario. If you play through the main story with tutorial messages on you will learn pretty much everything you need to know when you reach max level.

Cool, thank you for the reply

My wife and I are also thinking about trying FF XIV again (we played it at the original release).

How are the server economies? Is it a steep climb for someone new to reach a comfortable level of funds?

I also just recently started to get into FFXIV. And at least on my server, AH market prices fluctuate pretty dramatically from day-to-day. Special 50-item materials sell for 100+k, while level 40 items sell for 1-2gil apiece while level 15~30 mining items sell for 25~80gil for NQ.
Philos Tome items sell for roughly 50~90k depending on the item. (Dust Bunnies run for 40~60k if that tells you anything).
So far the supply/demand is pretty good except for really obscure items.

What's even more interesting is that there seems to be a serious shortage of tanks. So much that tanks are literally selling "themselves" for dungeon runs. Because the que time for a dungeon for a dps is literally average 30+ min wait time.

Do you mean soldiery tome items >.>? None of them have gone for that much since before 2.3, dust bunnies are about 2k and the mats run about 500-1000 a piece.

That has gone on in every MMO that uses the trinity system. People treat them like shit (some tanks are bad) and most won't deal with it. Just roll a Warrior (Female Ro) and you will never wait again.
    You cared enough to post.

At 50, theres alot to do before you get caught up with everyone else. Alot of the dungeons you would need are locked behind quests/story quests which are long as hell
“Snow can only live in the winter. When it nears a fire, it dies. That is its life. It may yearn for summer, but… it can only desire it. In my hand, the snow becomes water, because this is not its world….”
“The boundless Heavens and Earth are the final resting place of all living things. Life is like a journey, filled with various scenery, various paths.

Most of them are single quests that aren't related to the story in any way. Either way it can be a bit overwhelming when you reach 50 these days but you can skip a lot of it if you don't want to and just head straight into Crystal Tower and Binding Coil using the Duty Finder after getting a bit of gear from dungeons or farming hunts to buy ilvl 100 gear.

    Fun factor:

    Tanks - 9
    Healers - 4
    Dps - 0

If you played WoW, picking it up won't be very difficult.

In FFXIV, you get the standard quests around the area, but some quest with a special logo, those are Main Storyline quest that you do not want to miss, as it will continue whenever new patches comes out. Unlike WOW where questing mainly for leveling up and dailies, other than that pretty much no one doing quests. In FFXIV there are the Main Story quests, which new storyline come out every patch still that bring the story forward. There are some fun side quests that is purely for fun (Hildebrand and Mog Delivery), and people love them.

The game is at a slower pace than WoW, with 2.5sec GCD, but as you level up you won't notice as you will get abilities that is not within the GCD, as you hit max level you will need to squeeze in those abilities in between GCD to do max damages, by that point you won't really notice the difference in pace anymore.

WOW is the "everything is at end game", hence most people rush the leveling. In FFXIV there are a lot to do before you hit max level, the story telling is much better, and you can go to Gold Saucer at Lv15 if I remember? Once you go there you will have plenty to do.

In WOW same raid have LFR mode and Normal and such. In FFXIV, the 24man LFR raid is a totally separate raid, Coil being the main 8man raid, Crystal Tower is your LFR 24man casual raid. There are also a lot of "Trials", instance with just a boss on their own, generally standard Final Fantasy summons: Garuda, Ifrit, Shiva and those lot.

We need a Phantom Train with a cameo Sabin suplexing the Phantom Train at the end.

I really really really shouldn't get a new MMO (as my 'addiction' to WoW has waned over the years and I'm not craving sitting at the comp all day to play an MMO), but the few people I know in WoW have been complaining about finding something new... I 'watched' a review for this and I was like 'alright' (I say watched since I was beating up a gym leader in Pokemon Y at that moment in time).

Game still has a sub correct?

Correct, the game still has a sub fee. Its $14.99 a month

There's also the entry version which is 12.99$ but you only get one character per server...which is not an issue at all.

Standard is $14.99, entry is $12.99. Difference is just how many character slots you can have.
Standard is 8 per server, 40 overall. entry 1 per server, 8 overall.
Due to the fact you can do everything as one character, there is no need to go with the standard plan.

I was thinking about starting as well. Just don't know which class to pick.

I would like to know, how is tanking, healing and DPS in FFXIV, compared to WoW? Do tanks rely too much on gear? Is healing too much of a burden?

I always played as a Mage in WoW, wondering whether I should stick to a Black Mage or Summoner in FFXIV, or maybe try something new.

It's a little old school, more like Vanilla WoW compared to modern WoW. For example, threat matters. Survivability is more passive (outside of cooldowns) and not active.

Everything feels a little slower, which you may or may not like. Personally, I think modern WoW has gotten a little too fast for my tastes, so I like the slower nature of FFXIV.

Summoner is like Warlock: DoT based class with a pet. The difference is that you have to manage your pet's cooldown for max DPS. They are also pretty mobile.

I'd compare Black Mages with Arcane Mages in WoW. Burst caster, has to manage his/her MP and suffer in heavy movement fight. They also have the best AoE in game.
