Mammoths were ecosystem-engineers, they trampled over bushes and trees, which gave space for grass to grow, they also fertilized the grass with their warm manure which allowed the grass to grow at a faster rate. We technically don't need mammoths to do this, we could use camels, bison, wild cattle, horses, but mammoths were as they cleared and engineered trees.
