For those that disagree with Ferg's statement, you should take the time to look up what was actually done in the 70s and 80s. Reagan might not even be a successful Democrat by today's standards (yes, both parties in the US have shifted that far right). As another example, some of the highly conservative Democrats from the mid-west in the 80s ended up being the most liberal Democrats by the early 2000s due to the political shift (their voting and concepts never changed).
I myself am slightly left of actual center socially, and slightly right of actual center fiscally (which means I'm an extremist liberal according the current generation who thinks history started 3 years ago).
