ultra rare drops to make 5-man content relevant??

    I got to thinking...

What if the final boss in 5m dungeons (heroics) dropped incredibly rare gear/mounts? It can either be great ilvl (adding things as patches come out) or amazing graphics. Maybe legendary transmog gear with cool effects.

I'm talking super rare! Fractions of a percent. BoE.

RNG is necessary design but not good design, don't add more just so overgeared and overskilled players have to carry in heroic dungeons.

I'd be ok with this, I miss having multiplayer PvE content to grind, I genuinely used to enjoy grinding 5mans for my VP etc.

Only thing would be these super rare items would have to be personal loot. I'd get pretty mad losings rolls over and over. I'd say BoE would also be a good idea, I hate when RNG just makes you feel like 'what's the point'. Needs to feel obtainable. Maybe things like weapon xmogs, tabards, mounts, companion pets. Maybe just a rare chance at a sack of gold (like a proper amount of gold, not 20g. Like... 5k or something). If those drops were a 1% chance at getting something I'd probably grind it out.

Unless you do mythic 5-man, skill will never really be a thing in 5m. The currency just rewards people who can play a lot.

What if the RNG scaled based on performance? The more damage you avoid, the better you handle mechanics, the drop rates increase...

Do you mean similar to the epics that had a tiny chance to drop in MoP 5 mans?
Those were not worth it if you ask me, but yah, I'd actually step foot in one again if there was some really cool transmog or something
Problem with transmog is that if it looks cool to someone, it may not look cool to someone else, so it may end up only motivating a handful of people. (Especially if they continue with the brown, browner, and greenish-brown color pallet they've been stuck on since Cata.)

What if there was a chance to drop a coin purse that contains a few thousand gold OR, even better, a new type of cosmetic gear that is exclusive to dungeons.

Just put mounts back in, don't even need to be ultra rare, just have them at normal mount drop chance.

I'd be down for that, but make it a 3-8% drop from gold CM finish, will get more people experiencing the dungeons as they are meant to be played.

What 5-man instances need is to be fun for casual players to run over and over again without any particular stress about whether one or two players are "bads."

They don't need to be made into challenging content to provide yet another thing for raiders to do, which the other 90-99% of players won't come near.

Now, I have absolutely no problem with people being rewarded with basic raid gear just for showing up in 5-mans, because ... game is about playing and having fun.

This is not diablo, the game is close enough to it and we do not need more of it

mounts were the only reason i ran heroic UP back in wrath every day. It's the reason people still run firelands, ulduar, icc etc.

Making any kind of group content drop mounts/battle pets is good for the game. It would keep 5 man wod dungeons alive if they dropped mounts.

But NO to any kind of legendary gear or item that gives you a huge advantage in combat as putting such an item with such a low drop chance is a terrible design. One of the flaws BC Legendary weapons had.

Reminds me of BC heroics, where the bosses all dropped blues, but the final boss dropped an additional epic item. Cut Gems too, now I think of it.

or maybe they should add reputation tabards, reputation with gear for gold and add some kind of currency that players get for running dungeons and that they can spend on buying gear? yeah, maybe

People need to stop with this non-sensical argument.

The game is nowhere near the state of diablo. What the game needs is more incentives to run 5man dugneons and lower difficulty content. Add in ultrarare loot, make it legendary or something, or better yet add in more tertiary stats. Double socketed, super warforged, etc etc. Anything to spice up items more and not have everybody running around in the same loot. Standard sockets and warforged is a step in the right direction. More is better.

You should play the game because it's fun, not because you have 0.1% drop chance to get something.

It's like in real life: do you prefer to have fun going to a gig, playing football with friends or anything that rock your world... or spending hours pressing the single button of a casino machine because it *may* drop the jackpot?

Totally subjective. To many people, pressing buttons on a casino machine is very relaxing, extremely addictive, and fun. Since we are discussing a video game and not an outdoor sport, it makes perfect sense to implement such.

I want to run instances because they are fun.

Things that make them more fun are adding challenging/interesting objectives. Challenge modes and achievements come to mind. More stuff like that to keep the instance fresh would make the content last longer - maybe a Mythic Dungeon mode for example.

Better rewards aren't a terrible idea if tied to these things because they provide an incentive for people to engage in the content which they hopefully find is engaging and fun. But I don't think incentivizing people through rewards to persist in repeating content that they have already lost interest in is a great idea at all.

There are only so many times that one can keep running an instance before one gets tired of it and wants to move on. That is ok.

What you don't want is people running the content even though they detest it. What the game needs is to find a good balance between incentivizing content that people are still happy to do, and allowing people to move on when they have had enough without feeling that they are losing out.

    Hmm, how about this idea:

    Scenario Mode:

Allow people to queue for 5 man instances so that the group finder forms them into groups of 3 with no tanking or healing specs allowed (alternatively allow for a tank or healer but not both at the same time). The instance is identical to a regular dungeon run, except that it now offers a different challenge to the players if they can no longer rely on tanks or healers. The instance offers better rewards, because split between 3 players instead of 5, and the queues should be almost instant. The intention is to keep the instance fresh and challenging for players once their gear has improved.

They had such drops in MoP and they were useless, because by the time you saw them drop, you'd usually outgeared them.
