MMOrpg's that are "alive" and "kicking"

So, I've been kind of bogged down with work for over 3 months and I'm definitely going to activate my 10day free WoW offer soon, but...

What MMO's are doing well, are coming out, are expected in the next few months?

    Anything groundbreaking?

There just seems to be a lull and I don't think it's just me being out of gaming action for a while.

Rift seems dead boring. I logged on the other day and found my old guild no longer there.
Wildstar, not heard much - and I quite fancied that.
ESO has just gone F2P last I read - and I intend to have a look at it.
    Neverwinter?
    Archeage?
    Black Gold?
    Swordsman?
    Firefall?
    Lord of the Rings?

Yes, I intend on doing some forum browsing and research, but since MMOchamp (from my experience) has the best forum community for MMO's, thought I'd ask you guys (and gals) ?

I imagine Final Fantasy 14 is doing quite well given their horde of content updates and impending expansion.
Tera might still be kicking, don't know if it's doing well.

    ESO is rather populated.

Some are very happy with Rift, but the big ones that most people are happy with right now are GW2 and FFXIV. Less popular than those 3 are Neverwinter and LotRO, but they have a pretty good following as well.

To my knowledge, Firefall, Archeage and Wildstar never really took off.

I have no informaiton about Black Gold or Swordsman.

I've been searching for a new MMO a little as well. So I picked up ESO the other week since it's F2P. My experience so far has been okay though I found it a little boring and the quest progression felt weird as I'm running back and forth a lot for nothing. So last week I bought Wildstar since the physical copy was on sale at Bestbuy.com (could pick it up in store which was nice) for $20. The digital version was still regular price from them so I think they're just liquidating their physical stock. Anyway I like Wildstar. I won't say a lot because I have issues with lag at times due to my POS comp, but the game looks amazing. And the humor in it is nice.

ESO (since their B2P conversion, not F2P)
    FFXIV
    GW2
    SWTOR

all seem to be doing fairly well

as for upcoming MMOs? Skyforge looks to be coming out in the near future, not sure how it is but it's in closed beta atm. Quite a few kickstarter and indie mmo projects are in line for the far future.

I don't think there are any AAA budget mmos coming out in the near, or far future though (maybe EQN)

My gods... a lot happens in 3 months. I've forgotten soo much.

I completely forgot FF14 and SWTOR and GW2 on my list - I like MMO's that have quite a good back-story. It's one of the appealing things about ESO.

    edit: also fond of Tera.

I agree with you on this. I like the atmosphere I experienced as well. Also love the art style and humour.

Neverwinter is getting an expansion, GW2 is getting an expansion and FF14 is getting an expansion. Personally I would suggest FF14 with GW2 on the side. That's what I would be doing if I didn't have a shit computer for FF14 (next tax return).

TERA is on the decline imo. They are literally doing backwards development. It's baffling to play, interesting to watch.

Honestly, this year looks a lot like last year in terms of MMO's.

Nothing new looks terribly mind blowing or exciting, but existing MMO's are getting some incredible updates and expansions. I'm far more excited in the GW2/FFXIV expansions and some of the updates for games like Rift and TSW (and some that have already landed for those two) than I am for any MMO I can think of coming out this year.

So, FF14 and GW2 seem like a good choice. That's great - they both ran really well on my PC.

Isn't there like some kind of asian westernizer MMO coming over that plays like Diablo 3/PoE? Haven't heard much from that. Oh and lolblack desert

You know what I quite enjoyed? Not Asian themed, but I did enjoy it - Marvel Heroes 2015 - it was worth at least one play-through and it's free.

You're probably thinking of Lost Ark, no word on when that's coming out in the West, or even Korea, IIRC.

And Black Desert isn't coming to the West until 2016 as per the last news out of Duam.

There's the echo of soul one which Curse seems to keep advertising at me. It's made by a large number of the original L2 dev team and looks like a fairly standard Eastern MMO with GW2 style combat but they're bragging about having "the most content ever on a MMO release" with something like 63 different zones. http://www.echoofsoul.us/

In regards to ESO. It's just amazing. I picked it up on release and just couldn't get past the first zone it felt so poor. Picked it back up a year later as it goes B2P and now I can't put it down. It feels so fluid, deep and interesting. (not to mention there is an absolutely ridiculous fucktun of stuff for a completionist like me to do). It really does feel like a true elderscrolls game just with hundreds of other people now.

The only ones doing well in terms of updates and general reception seem to be:

    FFXIV
    ESO
    GW2

SWTOR did fairly well with their Revan expansion, but I was done with it after leveling and seeing the story.
Rift's most recent expansion was a bomb and continued a decline in their content/service ever since they overreached with Defiance.
Archeage has been plagued with serious issues and basically bombed, even though the game is beautiful.
LotRO has never been 'big' but continues their same level of development and is moderately the same game it has always been (that's a good thing.
NWO is still solid, still adds content.
WoW is getting huge backlash for WoD and it's not worth it past leveling to cap.

As far as games on the horizon, there's not much to say. EQ Next was heavily anticipated before the whole Daybreak fiasco and now it's likely going to fade into irrelevancy. Lots of Eastern games floating around out there, but who knows what will really happen to them? I try to find some of them to play, but it's really difficult. The most recent Asian MMO that was 'new' I played was Yulgang 2 which is like Tera + Rift in terms of Aesthetic and has combos and kung fu air walking.

But yeah, in terms of mainstream Western MMOs there's not a lot going on. Those are the big 3 not named WoW. You can also try Warframe or Firefall if you want the FPS style MMOs. They both had recent large updates and whatnot.

Warframe is awesome, I agree. Warthunder too.

Thanks, guys - helped me with a bit of research here. So, Edge was right - and my suspicions too - not a heckuva lot on the mmo scene at moment.
