    California's 4+ Year Drought

"For the first time in the state's history, the governor has directed the State Water Resources Control Board to implement mandatory water reductions across California, in an effort to reduce water usage by 25 percent. The measures include replacing 50 million square feet of lawns throughout the state with drought-tolerant landscaping, banning the watering of grass on public street medians, requiring agricultural water users to report their water use to state regulators, and requiring large landscapes such as campuses, golf courses and cemeteries to make significant cuts in water use."

Nearly 50million sq ft of lawn must be replaced with drought tolerant landscape.

    Southern California, please.

I personally think having a lawn is as old as the baby boomer generation. It's time to move on from having such high-maintenance-front-and-backyards people. Maybe someone could invest on new, modern, environmentally friendly designed yards. Artificial grass or not, this could be a huge money maker.

These restrictions are far too little, and I fear a little too late.

There's a lot of drought tolerant plants that grow fantastically well here, by which I mean you water them twice a month in the summer. I've got a small garden out back with things like pincushion flowers, lavender and sage, all of them are very low maintenance. You can have a beautiful yard while using significantly less water than you bathe with =D.

    Also, xkcd

Some reporter should take a ride through the Beverly Hills type areas and find out if those super rich have dead lawns.

yea the golf courses and waterparks should be the first to go. also this insipid desire to have a lawn needs to grow brown and die.

Golf Courses have got to be the first to go. It's a severe waste of water and landscape really.

This would be pretty difficult to enforce. Valley farmers pump up massive amounts of water from unregistered wells for farming.

Nothing but their own fault for ignoring the signs of global warming, then doing nothing combat it. Hopefully the FEDS will give them the same treatment they gave the south. Either they comply with their demands, or deny all preventative funding.

Multi-Year droughts happen in cooling cycles, warming cycles, and relatively stable time periods.

A few years of drought =/= climate change

You're going to need a much much longer graph to make that correlation.

Personally I think "natural" or xeriscaped yards look far better than a square of green grass, particularly if local plant life is used. There are a ton of xeriscaped yards out here in Oregon (my front yard is xeriscaped) and they're much easier to maintain than traditional yards imo.

    Xeriscaped yard in AZ.

Sorry Sledfang, I'm not a denier, so I'll take my conversation elsewhere. Have a blessed day!

meantime corporations are draining millions of gallons unchecked, gotta curb that or none of these measures will be enough http://www.desertsun.com/story/news/...ater/12589267/

selling groundwater as the state withers, using native american land to avoid restrictions. Cali's gonna dry up and blow away while nestle literally vampire drains the state

This tangential argument doesn't change that this drought is unmatched in the last thousand years.

Study linking this specific drought to CC.

Not a definitive link, because of the statistical nature of everything under discussion.
