well they have..... look at Garrosh, sure he was a train wreck in some ways, but he was the most built up character with a very good story in the long run.

you know also they are planted characters for the future, Anduin, wrathion, the draenei and blood elf girl. Possibly could see a return of two alliance heroes with next expansion which i do not need to name. Also got Thralls Son. Basically Blizzard is already planting the seeds of future games/expansons.

However, everyone knowns and INCLUDING BLIZZARD that Illidan was one of there worst mistakes in TBC and how they played his story out. And they planting seeds of hints of him alive with the Green Fire questline as his minions are still around *observing*.

And it's not unreasonable that since he became something more than demon and Night Elf that he did go to the twisting nether
