What's the best way to get through flooded streets?

With Spring being in the air, and weather like rain being in the forecast for 2015, what are some of your survival tips for getting through some of the storms and beatings we take while driving to and from.

What is the best way to drive in the rain?

And what are your driving tips?

Tip: Don't drive through them. Take the long way around, and if there is no long way, its not worth going there.

for general rain: dont drive on the right hand side, since water seems to like to accum, ulate at the edges and cause hydroplaning!

Yeah, that's a good tip, been reading a little up on this, and some of the conventional wisdom seems to be wrong, some I've talked to said it's better to speed up through intersections if you have no choice, that way you push the water out of the way, rather than letting the engine get flooded.

I've seen entirely too many people get stuck trying those kinds of tricks. Its just better to avoid it entirely. That goes doubly if the water is moving, since moving water can be incredibly powerful relative to how deep it is.

I don't see much flooding in ca but when I do, I splash people on the sidewalks.

Hit the pedal. Faster you're out of it the safer you are.

It doesn't really matter. A small car or big 18 wheeler. Speed is the key for safe and secure exit of any rain and flood.

Know the depth your car can manage and if absolutely neccessary, drive through it slowly after ascerting a decent chance to make it to the other side. If you can already see that the water washed away the road don't even try it, chances are you will sink into the now loose ground and get stuck. Same for when the body of water is already fast(ish) moving, there are very few scenarios where it would be worth even attempting to do that. Hitting a body of water at max speed is the dumbest idea ever, most likely you'd trigger your airbags and knock yourself out doing that.

Yeah but it's difficult to know where the engine sits too, which is why I wonder if it's just better to just speed through, get enough momentum, instead of getting stuck especially in a car.

DON'T DRIVE THROUGH FLOODWATERS. Pretty simple really imo

If you have too, only do it with a diesel and if possible an engine snorkel.

A small petrol power car will flood, the sparkplugs (which are not present in diesels) will short, you car will stall and you will be stuck, and then die.

That isn't the reason for it and you know it. And if you don't, then you have no idea who Salandrin is or why nobody likes him.

I am thinking something like this

I think it can be really tough to tell, which is why I made the thread, wondering if folks through trial and error have good tips. Because some of the online stuff is all over the place, so I am wondering about practical experience.

if it's deeply flooded you could take a humvee and drive through it.
