It's not just any god they have to believe in, it's referring to specifically the islamic version of events. As far as christians and jews are concerned the version of their god as depicted in islam is a fictional character in a book and will be the judge of nothing; they don't accept the islamic version and therefore, according to islam, are just the same as any other non-believers and are destined to burn.

Yes, but muslim does not refer only to Islam, it refers to the idea there is only one god, allah, and that is what adam believed.
