Thread: Linux

    Linux

I had an extra laptop sitting around and I kinda wanted to play around with Linux. So, I installed Linux and everything seemed to go fine. It said everything was installed and to restart. I restarted and this is what came up.

Any ideas of why or how to fix this?

...Which version of Linux lol...? Not even just the distribution, you could have downloaded a server version.

It is not 'broken'. It is not even in a image format. An image has to end with like a .jpg for it to be used to insert an image here. This 'picture' seems to be from an email or something.

Try hosting your image on a site like imgur. Won't really work if you use link gmail.

That was after Ubuntu 14.04. I downloaded the ISO and used a USB installer and then installed.. Well, attempted, anyways to install it on the laptop with the USB.

Still not sure what the problem is. Did you install it on the right partition?

(To Blue) It's an old laptop that I don't use anymore, so I just wrote over Windows and was going to have Linux be the only OS.

    *stares at the picture*...

Did you correctly choose 32 bit? (Actually I think the options are x386 or AMD.)

I would create an Ubuntu DVD and install from that. Ubuntu is a nice distribution for people who are just starting out.

I would really like to use Linux but every time I try something goes wrong.

Ubuntu 64 bit can't be used? (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop) It looks like it's recommended unless you have less than 4G ram.

You also need a 64-bit CPU. If it's a sufficiently old laptop, it may not have one. Do you happen to know the specs of the laptop?

I'm pretty sure Ubuntu 14.04 is like over the size that fits on an average CD, which is mad annoying. I'd be willing to bet his old laptop's CD player is broken too.

Hold on OP. I'll turn on my laptop (that ironically I have dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04 too) and I'll tell you the software I used to burn iso to my USB.

But seriously if you installed with i386 version I would try AMD64 this time, and vice versa. That threw me off multiple times. Alternatively you could use another distribution. My friend uses Xubuntu (and I do too on a virtual machine since lolsoannoying Ubuntu is slow on those).

That's the name of the website I got my installer from to burn the iso onto the pen drive. "Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.5.6" is the specific software name I downloaded.

    Unfortunately, I do not.

While it's about 5 years old, it is in pretty good shape. I just don't use it anymore.

Alright I'm getting kinda tired and I gotta be up early to catch an early movie.

Try ubuntu-14.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso and ubuntu-14.04.2-desktop-i386.iso. Use the pen drive I said. Make sure in your BIOS for the laptop you have everything setup well.
