I think what it is, is once the OS is released Win 7/8/8.1 users will have 1 year to upgrade to 10, after that they have to pay for the upgrade.

Pretty sure Microsoft said that wasn't going to happen.

Quite some aggressive marketing from Microsoft to push people to Windows 10...

Uninstall KB3035583 if you don't want to be nagged.

I don't know where people are getting this bad info from, but everywhere I've seen this news has someone who posts the same thing.

It's not subscription based, it's the same as windows xp/vista/7/8.
    It's not a trial.
It's an offer for a free upgrades that expires after a year. If you don't accept the offer within a year you will have to buy a retail copy.

Pretty much the same as when Microsoft offered to upgrade Win 7 to 8 for $15. I think I still have a few of those codes laying around that I never used. >.>

Lucky! I applied for 2 upgrades on the same night and one of them was rejected so I had to pay the full 40$ for it.

This, but ive seen on other sites that people state if you buy a new machine after release date you gotta cough up the dollars,
This is only for current w8.1/7 that is already installed.

Well you could buy the new hardware first, transfer an existing W7/8 license and upgrade to W10 which then should be valid for the "lifetime of that device".

However MS hasn't really made clear what exactly they consider "lifetime" or "device" for a desktop PC.

They also haven't really said that you cannot transfer the license later - although it seems likely that they won't allow that.

WinXP was valid for 15 years is which is far beyond the expected lifetime of a PC...

Just run "C:\Windows\System32\GWX\GWX.exe" icon will show near clock...

The issue i have is all i want is the key, I always fresh install via a clean ISO. Don't want to upgrade extract the key then reinstall.

It showed up on my PC but not on my laptop, not sure why the laptop isn't showing the upgrade icon as it's running 8.1, PC is running Win 7 Ultimate. I'm on the fence about it, I don't want to turn down a free upgrade but at the same time I don't want to risk running Windows 10 and finding my recording software doesn't work. I had issues in the past moving from Win XP to Win 7 where a lot of my plugins decided they no longer wanted to work.

I'm running Cubase 5 with a lot of stuff that no longer gets updated, plugins and drivers alike... So If I move to Win 10 and come across issues I will no longer be able to go back to Win 7? I've also heard of a lot of compatibility and performance issues with various games running on the Win 10 preview.

On the shelf about it really.
Probably running on a Pentium 4

Trying out things like that is what the public preview is for.

Game performance can't be evaluted properly in the preview because there's DirectX12 coming in the final version and lack of proper driver support in beta.

From what I've seen using the last preview few weeks with Nvidia beta drivers was that there's no visible difference in WoW performance.

Its a 1 year limit on the existence on the offer to upgrade for free, its not a 1 year long trial if you do upgrade during that year, if you upgrade within that time period its yours forever.

And W10 is supposed to last "forever" i.e. be always up to date.

That's why they attached the license to the "device" (most likely the main board in a desktop PC) which means you'll need a new license once you change the device (or upgrade the main board?) - unlike XP and other non-OEM versions which could be transferred to a new device.

If you don't trust the links its kb3035583

They will install the Windows Update for the prompt.

Then hold Windows Key + R and in the box put C:\Windows\System32\GWX\GWX.exe

You should now see an icon near clock

Windows 7 can be transferred also just phone activation. The old key from another machine will let you install but wont activate unless you do it via phone.

Not sure why you would want to do that though - it's not like they'll be running out of licenses or "reservations".

Indeed. But I'm not sure Microsoft will allow this for Windows 10, i.e. transfer your W10 license to another machine.

I've been looking for comparisons between 7 (Ultimate) and 10, but I couldn't find anything that wasn't basically sensationalist media or personal opinions with no numerical data to back it up. My rig is about four years old now, I think, and I've no idea if I should go 10 or not. :|
