i must be imagining how just about every show at e3 had VR headsets featured. AMD talking about needing 8gb gpus to pull it off.

I probably won't ever get one, but my girlfriend plays games just as much as I.

1992 ish, Sega came out with a system call Sega Master system it looked like
It was 3D technology, now mind you 3d was about 15 years old then, and you know what, it sucked, BADLY! It came with a game called Missile Defense, and some other games you could buy for it
this was one of them
Now at the time what people though of when they generally though of 3D was a bit different but with the advanced state of the art glasses and newer technology, it was supposed to be a dream, again it wasn't it was horrible, the glasses always broke which they did exchange for free under warranty, but they did break often, and after playing a while your eyes hurt.
Now Fast forward to 2011 20 years later with the
Pretty cool HUH? EH NO! it didn't do that at all, it didn't look like that, it sure as hell didn't feel like that and it was expensive, and aside from a movie or a couple of hours you got a headache and the experience still pretty much sucked as was hard to feel lost in, much like the movie theaters which were much more expensive systems and state of the art and a good chunk of people still had the same complains.
And of course there were the glasses which you needed at first which you needed to buy several if you wanted You and some friends to watch anything.
So No 20 years isn't going to make a difference just because the date on the calendar changed. 3D for sure still didn't work and sure enough as bad as they pushed it in 2011 unlike with HD which stations and cable providers added to their line up service, 3D died AGAIN!
Maybe you are right about what you seen concerning VR now, but from what I've seen you still have the same problems.
1. You have to sit up to experience it, which means after a while your neck and head are going to hurt.
2. There is probably only going to be one set maybe 2, but of course nobody else you know can really share the experience with you.
3. There are going to be limits to how real it feels it ain't going to be the holodeck.

do yourself a favour and watch the e3 streams. actual playable versions of vr games have been blowing people's minds last couple days. comparing it to early 90s stuff is just stupid

You have to witness VR yourself to understand how epic it can be.
VR headsets are way overrated. There is literally no reason to use them outside of some games like Anna, Gone home, Dream or horror games. Don't even get me started on people with X/Y vision, or people who get motion sick from these things

I've still got one of those. Never knew about the 3D stuff for it though.
They're working on that. For example, an interesting discovery from earlier this year.

So, they make VR headset less virtual to stop people from getting motion sick? Doesn't really sounds like a solution. And it's not really a "discovery from earlier this year", we knew this for ages - if you get motion sick, find a (immobile) spot to focus on. If you are on a boat, car, plane, whatever, it helps.

Yes they are. In normal vision, you've got your nose there, just barely visible. But in the virtual reality headset, you can't see your nose (as the headset is in the way) and this evidently contributes to motion sickness, so they project the nose onto the screens to compensate.

You get your nose under your eyes, not in front of them. Unless they literally put a nose in their headset - it's not "more real", it's still on a screen. All they do is just add an immobile spot for your brain to focus on, and it's still in front of your vision (on a screen), and on different focus that real nose is in real life.
Just to make my point clear - they do not make it more real, they attempt to patch the obvious flaw of all VR headsets. Patch, not fix them, like you patch a hole in a boat.
Not saying that it won't work, but it's quite dumb to say that it adds more realism. Unless it's freaking holo deck there is no way they can make VR headsets more "realistic".
And i even doubt that it will allow them to progress in "making-a-holo-deck" goal, because it's a freaking screen that projects two pictures right in front of you. Doesn't matter how cool and complicated they want it to sound like - it's a very simple thing that already was done in the past and was forgotten. But now, thanks to aggressive marketing and youtube many go nuts about them, not realizing obvious issues with them - games availability, physical issues (eyes, neck, etc), making gameplay more difficult (420 noscopes are quite hard with VR headset, even just quickly turning around gets (at least for me) more difficult than with standard monitor).
It's great entertainment tool - but that's it. I can't see anyone playing with VR set on in something like CoD, Battlefield, LoL, Dota or what popular games are around. Watching movies? Interesting concept. Playing horror games? Great concept. But outside of that (VR headsets is niche market, horror games are even more niche market than VR sets), there is no reason to hype about them

I don't know that I'd have any fun with VR headsets that obliterate outside sensory input (other than touch). I know nausea was an issue for a decent % of people who messed around with them 10 years ago or so, and while that's taken into account a bit more now than it used to be, I'm not sure I trust that it's been completely ironed out. They also all look ridiculously uncomfortable. I hate wearing my own headset, I don't even want to think about adding even more weight on my head.
I'd be much more interested in the Augmented Reality version, where you can see the real world around you.
I suppose I've never been all that interested in being that cut off from what's going on around me. I feel like I've got immersion just fine as it is. I can be oblivious to the world simply by reading a book. Adding additional barriers to the real world does not appeal. I would like to be able to look around - up, down, left, fight, simply by moving my head, but not at the expense of normal awareness. Unless, I suppose, I only used the device in a large empty room where I couldn't be bothered by other people to begin with.
As others have said, though, it's not the VR device that'll cause problems, it's being a dope and not exercising proper self control, or being able to set healthy boundaries in your relationship. If you want to be consistently unaware of the person you've claimed you want in your life, something's a bit messed up.

She's a more hardcore gamer than I am so I bet she would be fine with it.
I think it will just lead to a slew of badly implemented games with extortionate prices. Much like Avatar was the only movie released in 3D that was designed to be watched in 3D; there will be one ortwo big titles with it well implemented. And then every other fucking game will be ported lazily over and ply like a pile of crap. And cost you $30 more.
Then it will just be used for porn.
