    Thumbs down Toxic Community?

I've never played DOTA2 or LOL so HotS is my first attempt at a MOBA. I've heard stories of how toxic the MOBA communities are so I was always put off trying them.

So I find that pretty much every game that we lose people are bad mouthing, accusing other players of playing poor, etc. I know you can turn chat off but I feel it's needed to do tactics and relay information, especially in Hero League. Of course I always block communication as well, but you just don't need the harassment from it all the time. The funny thing is, it's the exact opposite when we win, it's all very positive and good will.

Also from what I gather, I can't see any feature that has guilds or clans so I can't search to play with friendly people who don't mind getting there butt kicked every now and then.

I just don't understand the mentality of some people, yes some players do some things wrong and collectively the team hasn't worked out. I know it can be frustrating playing with someone who isn't very good or up to your standard but the fact is most people think there standard is pushing 9 outta 10. When in reality they are far from it and the player being harassed usually isn't that bad either. Of course you get the odd player who doesn't understand the game that well but most of the time players know what they're doing.

I would say I'm not a bad player but I'm not the best either, I'm just a very experience gamer with around a 60% HotS win-rate. I've been playing games since commodore 64, I use to play Counter-Strike at a very high standard in my teens alas my reactions have slowed down now. I would say I play games more casual now, especially after falling ill recently I don't need the stress of competitive gaming.

Anyway, this has turned more in to a blog now and it's getting late here in the UK. No hard feelings to anyone, this is just what I've experienced. I hope Blizzard implement strong penalties for constant abusers and intricate a guild/clan feature for people who enjoy the game but don't want the constant harassment.

What are everyone opinions on the community so far?

With the game's full launch, bad apples have naturally come in (as with every mainstream game with competitive multiplayer). Ranked play is much, much better I've found. Blizzard has said they're planning on adding a D3 clans like feature so that should help significantly. Overall, I find it great atm; just block someone the instant they begin bad mouthing and forget about it, or if you want you can outright just mute chat entirely. Playing with friends is the best way I've found. If you don't have them, just go find them here on MMO-C to play with.

Quick match is mostly unplayable for me - dunno maybe I have too high expectations/standards but I just can't stand the onslaught of name calling and general lack of any sense of restrain. Yet I need to play QM because we are "boosting" one of our friends so he can play rank asap (he already has almost all heroes).

Ranked is better - you still going to experience everything from QM but in tad smaller quantities. Higher you get, less retards you'll get. But don't expect that at the top you'll find refined gentlemen smoking Davidoff cigars while drinking 12y scotch. You will still get called a faggot, just.. less often.

You could join a hots community and play with them instead.

I really don't get this whole outrage at the "toxic community". I mean, the first time I witnessed people being rude online, it shook me up. But that was years ago. Sure there are people calling others noobs and retards, but so what? How does that bother anyone? If anything, it amuses me.

I think it's just the gaming community these days. People seem to be extra shitty lately in all games.

Some people just have no tolerance for bad players. Or some bad players think they are good and the others are bad, and they have no tolerance for what they think are the bad players.

In Vs A.I. I dont think I've ever seen a single toxic player, and ive been playing since alpha.

Vs Players I've seen a few, but I haven't really played it for the last 4 weeks.

Probably most players in there don't feel confident enough to play against real people and are generally still a bit noobish. And really, against A.I. is so easy, there is never a reason for outrage anyway.

That sort of behaviour is never justified.
It does lose a game players.
Just a bunch of spoilt brats hiding behind the anonymity of the internet to do what they can't get away with in real life and face to face.

Calling someone a noob in a videogame is never justified?

The important thing to remember is that Vs. AI is a cooperative experience, not a competitive one. Thus, the friendly atmosphere. The AI is also more lenient than a real player, thus more room to breathe. You will also almost never lose an AI game unless your whole team is stupid; a single stupid player won't lose the game.

I don't see them particularly often, when I do I ignore them or block communication if they are particularly bothersome. It's not really any more or less toxic than any other place on the internet.

    - Online , aka no physical reaction to your words
    - Anonymous, aka no emotional reaction that you have to care about
    - A goal only achieveable via a group, aka you cannot 1v5 in hots, you cannot solo a raid in WoW

put them together and you get dickheads. this trio of circumstances is in every mmo, fps, moba etc and they all result in the same outcome. 'x community is so toxic' I've heard of WoW having a toxic community, runescape, SWTOR, GW2, CoD, Battlefield, LoL, DoTA and soon to be Overwatch.

Human beings are just toxic. Physical and emotional response IRL stops the vast majority of them ever being toxic, but there is very few boundaries online.

It would be headline news if a competitive or group based online game didn't have a noticebly toxic community. Community is a word I dislike on online games too. You couldn't call someone who golfed in the golfing community. He would have to specifically join a community of golfers just to be called that. So why the mere fact that someone plays HoTS means they are in a community is beyond me.

You calling them dickheads is more "toxic" than them calling people noobs.

Because noob is the only word thrown around right?

Also, who says I am not toxic? I've been online gaming for 11 years and I don't exactly shy away from pointing out if someone is a complete and utter twat.

    Then you're a hypocrite.

You don't even know what that word means do you?

Me pointing out that online gaming playerbases are pretty much universally toxic, then proceeding to say that I am probably toxic is not hypocritical. It would only be hypocritical if I was pointing out how toxic everyone else is as if they're different to me.
