And I want to say the reason rates went up was:
Knowledge of what it is.
Fads for rebellious kids. (A fair amount of it is self-diagnosed. And another part could be attributed to quacks. Remember when Ritalin came out? I got thrown on it, too for being 'energetic'.)

Mental health issues in NA are incredibly high. This may well be among a contributing factor, but the key is to always know what you're putting into your body. Unless you're being lied to... question... everything...

We actually diagnose autism and other conditions now. We used to just throw people like that in the asylums.

Nobody outside America believe that Thiomersal causes Autism, and only comedians and the uninformed public even believe it in America.
There have been no reliable studies linking the chemical and the condition. It's simply not true. Thiomersal is contained in tiny amounts in vaccines and is completely harmless.
They even have trialled removing Thiomersal from vaccines in various areas of California and the rate of Autism occurrence remained exactly the same.
