Question regarding the Lore - really lost new player

    Dear all,

can someone tell me a good website or briefly summarise the lore for FF IXV? I understand there are millions of titles out there I remember playing one of them on SNES and Playstation if my memory doesn't fail me.

Does the MMO storyline base on those games or is it just something entirely new made up? What i gathered so far is that there was a planet that lived in peace - than another planet exploded, a big monster dragon came out and destroyed the peaceful planet. Now we are re settling on that new reborn realm right?

    thanks
    Saaraae

Not quite and yeah it's a new story.

I can give you the short version before finding a good site.

Basically the original game 1.0 bombef SO BAD that they ended it with Bahamut(said dragon) destroying the world after coming out of the moon it was sealed in(i am giving non spoiler version)

The world itself is the same but "Reborn"(thus 2.0.or the base game neing called ARR)

Basically think WoWs cata only wuping out a REALLY bad game and it being part of lore.

Sooo TLDR same planet as before dragon got freed planet revived and all that jazz.

Now as for more extensive lore basically this planet goes through astral and umbral cycles astral being good happy times umbral bad shit goes down regularly. We are in the 7th astral I believe though ARR starts in the 7th or 6th Umbral era.

There have been many civilizations before ourd Allagan among them but about 5k years ago the Allagan died out.

Most of the rest is basically inconsequential but I will find a good source I think the official forums has a timeline

This link tells basically everything that happened in the original version of the game, but also has some spoiler-ish info from the current version of the game. You probably won't really realize anything that's a spoiler though, if you're just starting out. It's worth the read.

Some parts of the game (lore outcomes too!) are also loosely based on some of the past games. I mean... Warrior of Darkness on moon-ish setting? That's so GOLBEZ. , So, If you played past FF games, you may see some similarities in the story progression. Sometimes.

There's also a lot of callouts to other final fantasy people places and things. Nothing you need to know but its worth mentioning

Honestly, it's not a continuing story. Each FF game more or less stands on it's own. There are references to previous FF games, but those are more like Easter eggs for true fans.

FFXIV was the first FF game I played, and it was pretty understandable.

As others have noted, each Final Fantasy takes place on a different world and the stories are not connected. Most of the games don't even give their planets named to my recollection. The only ones that jump out at me are the two MMOs with XI being the planet of Vana'diel and XIV being the planet Hydaelyn (Eorzea is the continent the game has thus far taken place on).

So XIV is its own stand alone world & story, but it's filled with easter eggs from the other games that are great and amusing if you've played/remember old FF games, but if you've never played one it won't reduce your understanding.

    Examples of Easter Eggs:
Locke from FF6 is the basis for the level 50 Goldsmithing outfit design
Cloud from FF7's film "Advent Children" had his outfit added as a veteran reward
The Warrior of Light armor from artwork of original Final Fantasy is a tank set from a 24 man.
Setzer from FF6 has his outfit available in the Gold Saucer, which is a casino that appeared in FF7
Gilgamesh from FF5 appears in XIV
Lighting from 13 appeared in a limited time event when Lighting Returns released on consoles.
There's a pet based on the emperor from FF6.
Montoya's Cave from FF1 is a location in Heavensward and uses a version of the same music from the original game (my favorite nod to past games).

Biggs, Wedge, and Cid are in XIV, but they're in every Final Fantasy game. Well, Cid at least. Biggs and Wedge are at least in most of them.

So the references and easter eggs are small, usually cosmetic design of armor sets rather than story related.

I've never played a single FF game before and I managed to pick up the story pretty easily. Whenever something came up that I wanted to know more about I searched for it on the wiki and figured it all out. I do kinda like how they scrapped the whole 1.0 game in a big way. With the whole fire, and death, and the giant god dragon thingy of death and destruction.

I mean hey, you don't need to understand all of the details of what is going on to figure this stuff out.
