    Do spoilers actually bother you?

So after browsing the internet for years I'm sure that all of us have been spoiled at one time or another. For those who don't know what spoilers are, they are basically things that people say or pictures/videos shown that reveal the plot of point of a video game/TV show/book/etc. Being spoiled usually involves reading something that is a spoiler before you know that it is a spoiler so you can't stop yourself reading it. Basically by the time you realize it's a spoiler it's too late.

Spoilers are usually met with disdain. Hell, MMO-Champion has spoiler tag rules and the black bars to allow people to talk about plot points without spoiling people. But my question is do spoilers actually bother you? I actually seek spoilers out in many cases. I am an anime only consumer in that I don't read manga, but often when I catch up on a series I'll visit the wiki to learn about the events that will be going down in the future. If anything it gets me more pumped for the show (Unless the future events are boring of course. It works both ways.)

I think for me I don't care about the events themselves but more how they unfold. You could tell me that Snape kills Dumbledore but that would just make me want to see the movie even more. Of course, I prefer to encounter spoilers on my own terms, so I can understand the frustration when you unintentionally get spoiled. So, what about you guys? How do you feel about spoilers?

spoilers absolutely bother me. they more than just bother me, they piss me the fuck off. I've sat there pissed off watching a movie because some asshat decided to make a forum topic call "THIS CHARACTER DIES IN THIS MOVIE" and the entire movie is ruined before i even saw it.

    I get pretty upset yes.
It's few and far between that a movie or show surprises me, so when those few occasions are ruined, I get pissed.

    Holy hell, completely.

Even stuff that ends up being incorrect affect my viewing\reading\experiencing of the material, it's absolutely annoying. I avoid social media\forums before seeing something, but sometimes people just downright say stuff to your face... and that's ridiculous, so, go F yourself.

Bioshock 1 and 3 are good examples for this more so Bioshock one.

That twist was amazing for me. I was taken off guard and really fell in love with the game.
I have a friend who was hyped for Bioshock (i just grabbed and played it no research at all) and he found out the twist prior to the game being released. He still enjoyed it but he didn't love it as much as I did, yet he was the reason I played it at all until he found out he wouldn't shut up about it.

even finding out there is a "Twist" in anything will take some of the fun away because I will be looking for it. I prefer to go into movies/games blind now because I can fully experience the content.

Sorry to anyone looking to play the Bioshock series, I tried to be as vague as possible.

For me it depends on the story and how invested I am. When Harry Potter was still coming out, spoilers for it really bothered me. I managed to avoid them for the most part, at least the major ones, but I still hate the people who actively went around to midnight releases to spoil major plot points.

There are other stories that I will actively seek out spoilers, if I am less emotionally vested in the story, but I definitely feel that you should have to go out of your way to find them. That being said, there has to come a point where it's been too long to consider something a spoiler. I'm on the fence about spoiling a movie by discussing a book, but after a book has been released in paperback or a movie on DVD for several months, I think spoilers are then ok.

Yes, they do. And there's also no excuse for doing it. Especially when it happens in the most clumsy and stupid of all ways - in the title of a thread you didn't even click on. Anyone who does that is a moron.

No not at all. It actually hypes me up, if anything. I don't like surprises personally. Thats why I browse MMOC pretty much twice a day during game betas. If for example you told me Dumbledore dies before I seen Half Blood Prince. I'd be really excited. I'd want to see how that event played out and how it came to be.

I very often will read an entire wiki on a game or movie before even playing or watching it. I like to know all of the information about it so I can understand everything immediately. For example after a few game of thrones episodes, I went and read the entire wiki entries for all of the characters.

What DOES annoy me is when threads have !!!SPOILER DISCUSSION!!!! in the title and people still ask for spoiler tags on posts.

I wonder if theres a correlation between people who hate jump scare video games and movies and people who don't mind spoilers?

Sometimes I seek spoilers, sometimes I just hate them.

In WoW I generally want to get the info (lore) as fast as possible, including leaks, so I can discuss it with others and think of various options before full info is given.

However I was pissed when I accidentally stumbled upon info about battle with White Walkers in Hardhome (some retard wrote this sentence "and Jon Snow just proved that white walker's blades dont break valyrian steel"), basically ruining the whole episode for me because I exactly knew what would happen in last scemne that was supposed to be a surprise.

Hahaha dude practice what you preach. That episode came out not that long ago. Put that in spoiler tags. People aren't going to be expecting GoT spoilers in this thread.

Stories are designed in a way that they trigger very specific emotions in very specific orders in order to ensure the best experience possible, and also to properly unveil the latent meaning (or "moral") of said stories.
The order in which you consume a story has a huge effect over how much you can enjoy it. But there are so many people who would rather have instant gratification than simply experience the story in it's proper way. I guess spoilers work for them, but certainly not for me.

Yep and that's why I stopped posting in the Doctor Who mega thread.
    You cared enough to post.

The only "proper" way to experience a story is the way that provides the most enjoyment for you. If reading spoilers to get you hyped up for future events in the story brings you enjoyment then that is just as "proper" as waiting for the events to unfold normally.

A massive part of the experience and emotion is the build up. No one feels anything if you just say Dumbledore dies. He could die a thousand different ways. What is important is how he dies.

A really movie ruining spoiler would be: Snape kills Dumbledore because if he doesn't, Voldemort will kill Malfoy who was tasked to kill Dumbledore. Dumbledore only had a short while to live, anyway, due to touching a horcrux.

Now you know Dracos 'task' which is eluded to a few times. Now you know what is up with Dumbledores hand. Now you know why he let Snape kill him. The story is entirely ruined. However, if you just say Dumbledore dies or Snape kills Dumbledore its like, empty really.

I'm not putting spoiler tags on a very famous billion dollar film from 6 years ago, based on 10 year old billion dollar book.

Depends on the spoiler. Telling me something happens that I thought was coming but have not experienced myself yet doesn't bother me very much. Telling me something I did not see coming but am not surprised to hear bothers me a little. Telling me something that I never would have seen coming does bother me quite a lot.

That said, big or small, I try to avoid spoilers. For example, I do not watch Game of Thrones but I do read the books and now that the series has gone beyond the point of the books I am doing my damndest to avoid finding anything out (without a ton of success).

I'm in general not bothered by spoilers at all, unless they are very detailed.

If someone tells me that a character is going to die, instead of being outraged and feeling the movie/whatever is ruined, i'll start wondering HOW he dies. Is it after a majestic battle with a sudden betrayal from within? Did he trip over a snare? Did he make an enormous self sacrifice and explode in fancy fireworks?

So, yeah, not usually bothered. In fact, i am highly sensitive to characters i LIKE dying (guess why i do not watch GoT and win a cookie), so knowing this beforehand actually allows me to somewhat prepare for the character dying and thus i won't be lying sleepless thinking "why did this have to happen?!"

Doesn't mean i am not bothered by some spoilers, though. Detailed spoilers are horrid, don't tell me everything! But just getting to know simple stuff like "X dies" or "They'll go that way" does not usually bother me.

Am not necessarily bothered by spoilers, but if I can help it, I don't want to hear them.

I don't feel the same tension and emotions when you have no clue what will happen. That's probably why I find it hard to watch a movie/series twice.
