    [Movies] Nicolas Cage

    TL;DR:
    • I Can't figure out if Nicolas Cage is a good actor or a bad actor, he has won an oscar after all.
    • What are some good movies with him?
    • What are some bad movies with him?

A few people around the office and myself were talking about The Cage and how he has an Oscar where other actors (Mr. Decaprio) do not.
Which got me thinking about movies featuring The Cage and how he can be both a good and bad actor, of course lately I've only been able to think of the Bad movies with him but very few good movies with him.

    I'm hoping MMO-C could help.

I always thought of him as a decent actor, my problem with his stuff is that the movies he works on are just very bad movies even with a strong actor.

Set your expectations accordingly, and you'll tend to enjoy Cager movies.

Basically, Nic Cage IS freedom. Can you smell it?

It's not that Nicolas Cage is a bad actor. He's just REALLY struggling to find good roles.
    Great movies are:
    The Rock
    Con Air
    National Treasure
    Face/Off

But his best one is Lord of War.

Nic Cage made a name for himself playing quirky crazy characters (check out "Raising Arizona," it's a great movie and a good example of this), and then kind of got typecast in that role. He is capable of bringing much more to the table (watch "Leaving Las Vegas" and the more recent "Lord of War"), but he mostly ends up playing an over-the-top zany character, which is probably why the internet loves to make memes from his movie stills.

But most of his movies, he's pretty much playing the same character. You either like what he does or you don't. I mostly do.

    Watch Joe...

It's one the same level if not better then Lord of War.

Him winning an oscar doesn't really tell much about his qualities as an actor. Bad actors winning oscars is as common as morons holding academic degrees.

He really does suck. I like the guy, he's funny and quite a character, he's memorable - something that can't be said about a lot of the current generation of actors - and I liked some of the movies he did ... but he really, really isn't a good actor.

He pretty much accepts whatever he feels like doing even if it's a shit movie...which isn't bad as long as you are prepared to see him play both really well and really bad.

While IMDB is a great guideline of what is decent and what is not, it isn't set in stone. If you ask 10 people maybe 1 person will know the movie Joe (hell, you can make that 1 in 100) while almost anyone knows Lord of War.

I personally would rate Lord of War better because of the entire movie, but on the performance of the actor himself he did a better job in Joe.

He CAN act good, he just rarely does because you can be as great at what you do as possible, if the movie and script is crap then you will perform shit.

I'd rather watch Nicolas Cage than Jennifer Lawrence (act I might add).

Who would you rather receive naked selfies from?

I think I've enjoyed Nic's movies more than Jen's (and longer, since ConAir, gone in 60 seconds, The Rock are a decade older). And half of Jen's movies, i liked despite her (X-Men, they really could put anyone in the Raven/Mystique role as far as I'm concerned, by Jen is the IT girl).

Honestly I can't figure the guy out.
He doesn't make any sense to me.

Of course you have to watch Wicker Man and Ghost Rider, for they are the best of the best of movies.

Leaving Las Vegas and Wild At Heart are maybe two of the least shitty movies he made. I believe that he HAS potential as an actor, which he desperately fails to activate. This, and dumb roles.

I think he just doesn't take the business of making movies that seriously. At this point, he's gonna make money no matter what. Sure there are actors who are amazing and take their craft very seriously, but Nic Cage is not one of them. He's much like an over-the-top action movie, you have to go into it with a certain attitude to enjoy it or you'll spend the whole movie being the guy who points out plot wholes and ends up hating it.

If you take Nic Cage for what he is, then you will probably be in for a good time. If you're expecting a Meryl Streep quality performance, then you probably came to the wrong movie.

But what is he? He's an enigma, he's both good and bad, crazy and sane unique and generic.
Nic Cage hurts my brain to think about.

I'm going to watch The Rock and Conair tonight. No questions about that. I vaguely remember lord of war and I enjoyed that one.

He's a good actor who enjoys riskier movies. I feel like he's the opposite of Tom Cruise who's a mediocre actor that always picks roles in consistently good movies.

Really depends on your definition of 'good movies', Cruise has proven he can act in things like Tropic Thunder or Rain Man, but he keeps going back to average action movies like Mission Impossible.

Cage on the other hand... I've never seen him do anything truly remarkable. Lord of War was okay, but his character was a lot more about the writing than the performance. I don't think he's a bad actor, but I just don't have proof to tell myself otherwise.
