His a reasonable actor... but a horrible gambler, which is why he's takes on so many bad films.

In recent years he has had financial trouble and pretty much accepted any shit script. However he is a very good actor:

    Kick-Ass
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
    National treasure films
    Lord of War
    Matchstick men
    Gone in 60 seconds
    Face off
    The Rock
Leaving Las Vegas (probably best acting performance)
    Wild at Heart
    Raising Arizona
    The Cotton Club

    All good movies imo

Nicolas Cage is also part of the greatest single-shot opening scene of all time in Snake Eyes.

tbh I`m not a fan of his, his acting/character seems the same in every film I`ve seen him in.
Probably why there`s that old joke about him turning down a sarnie & the vendor was shocked, because it`s the first roll he`s turned down ;p

Still have bad memories of The Wickerman rip off &, ye gads, Knowing.

As for DeCraprio, not a fan of his either, best thing he did was sink in Titanic >
Although he was good in Wolf of Wall street.

EDIT: Okay, totally forgot about Raising Arizona, now that was good. Hmm, time to grab that disc from the shelf me thinks

And who else could pull this off?

I guess I am alone in thinking that ConAir and Face/Off were two of the worst movies I have ever sat through, next to Ghost Rider that is.

As far as good stuff nobody has mentioned Peggy Sue Got Married (with an extremely young looking Jim Carrey) and City of Angels (which has it's weird creepy stalker Angel moments, but overall he makes you like his character with his quirky innocence).

Usually I'd put that in the bloopers

Just play Guile's theme in your head while you look at that pic.

OT: I'm not particularly a huge fan, but I don't have any problems with him either. I liked Con Air and that Ghost Rider movie. Those are the only Nicolas Cage movies I can think of right now that really stood out to me.
