    Climate Science vs Deniers.

So to be clear, I support Science. If it is testable and repeatable I tend to acknowledge it.

So I want to know why do some people not trust science? Do they not see the changes in our world, it's thunder and Lightning here in LA in July, it never rains in July, last time was in 1839. California has been hit hard by the change in climate, and this freaky rain is because of the warn waters off the coast. Californian ocean waters are normally very cold, almost Scottish water cold.

So what's the deal folks. Because it seems obvious to me things are changing and not for the better, and I trust the Scientific answers as to what is happening.

It's human nature to latch on to shit that conforms to one's personal beliefs and biases even when it is factually incorrect. Happens all the time. Usually because it's easier.

When statistical adjustments account for 100% of measures global warming for the 20th century it would tell me that the models are need to be reevaluated.

    2) They don't, actually.

By the way, poll option 3 is nonsensical because even big oil has come out and admitted that climate is changing and we're causing it.

People don't believe in Science due to Religion, the reason why for example groups of people in the US believe this not to be true is that they really believe Jezus will come back in their life time and that he will make everything alright.

People believe what the media believes and the media has absolutely no idea about any science whatsoever.

Not just religion. I know atheists who used to deny climate change because they seriously believed it was a plot to steal their money. From what they told me, they changed their minds after watching a debate where a climate scientist wrecked a lot of the crap that deniers spew.

Sorry I'm not capable of breaking down Giss algorithms and finding flaws, although others have. Satellites have been giving much more moderate measures than the nasa stations.

I love and accept science, just not politically motivated armchair science

If others have done it, then cite that. It can't be this hard to back up an assertion. Also, measures of what? If there is a discrepancy, which one is more accurate? Is the difference in measurements significant to the model?

Real science is not as simple as "found a discrepancy; it's all bullshit."

How about I saw the data, read articles and formed an informed oppinion on the matter at hand?

Politics get in the way. Fear. General misunderstanding. Conflicts with their religious beliefs. For climate change specifically, the incredible investment it would take to address something 20, 40, 70 years down the road is just too much for politicians to take much interest.

It isn't just climate change. I think if we were to list the scientific consensus of many issues, some people would be surprised to find they are on the wrong side of science in some of their beliefs. Just a quick list:

Vaccines do not cause autism and are safe
    Humans evolved over time
GMOs are perfectly safe to eat
Climate change is happening and humans play a role in causing it
Organic foods are no more healthy than conventional alternatives
Water Fluoridation is a cheap and effective way to reduce tooth decay (for those fools in Portland, Oregon that still can't pass a measure to fluoridate the city's water)

While we should endeavour to reduce pollution as much as possible, and get away from fossil fuels (because who doesn't prefer clean air, and there are a limited amount of fossil fuels that will likely become more expensive to produce than renewable alternatives), I don't think we can do anything about the Earth getting hotter. Or colder. Because it has done both without us (multiple times), and it will do both with us, providing we can adapt and we don't wipe ourselves out through some other idiocy.

Those two weather events are probably being caused by the el nino that is occurring in the pacific. Not to say it has something to do with climate change (high % chance it does), just wanted you to make sure.

What we can affect is the rate at which it changes. Slow change allows for easier and less expensive adaptation.

You asked someone else for a citation, last I heard only BP was even trying to be green (failing at it but trying), the rest fund climate lobbyists and politicians who deny climate change, or that it is man made.

What a biased set of poll questions. Theres plenty of science that proves greenhouse gases come from many other sources not man-made. Its not just big oil company lies. And because storms are worse, etc. is a silly example. Was the warming man-made that caused the icecaps to melt? What about the science that now shows solar flares will die down in 20-30 years, leading to potentially significant colder temperatures across the globe?

Weather has been changing since earth was created. To point to changes in the past 5-10 years and say its due to man-made climate change is ridiculous.

I think everyone agrees that man is producing significant greenhouse gas emissions. In general, I do not feel that we should "test" if this will cause a signficant change to our planet. Not worth the risk. But just because Al Gore said there is global warming and then profited off of it, does not mean its real.

El Nino has just started and we shouldn't be feeling the effects until September at the earliest. The 4 years of drought are 100% not related to El Nino.

Chevron is and has been the largest provider of geothermal energy in the world for some time now In fact up until 2008/2009 Shell was a huge wind power provider. The problem will always come down to money obviously. But they're not stupid, they're in the business of making profit. Anything that will do that, will happen. It's a catch-22 for them at the same time though, since it requires investment of capital, which in an oil price dearth isn't as abundant as it needs to be. But at the same time, high prices in oil make it look more attractive.

Oh, they do that. But they've at least made public statements acknowledging it. And by "they" I mean Shell, BP, Exxon, Chevron.
