    Do you think mermaids existed?

Could it be that sailors were fatigued and seeing things--or were there really mermaids swindling them at sea?

Atlantis is said to be a fictional island created by Plato but what about all of the historical documentaries made on it? Geographical evidence? I wonder if mermaids lived in Atlantis?

If you mean mermaids as, alf human alf fish i would say no, however its possible that there were some type of aqutic creature that, when someone wanst on they full self, could be mistaken as a mermaid but even this is a bit hard to belive.

That's like saying I think centaurs and harpies are real.

I agree with NPEC, it's more that sailors merely mistook some sort of fish to look like a mermaid. Because let's think of it rationally here; we evolved from a primate ancestor, not a fish, there would be no reason for something like this to occur even in nature.

It's just a myth from drunken/tired/sick sailors, or even for just an interesting story to tell.

    How can you be certain?

There is no evidence of them to have existed, nor is there evidence of any creature close to it. Since there is no direct or indirect evidence of them it is safe to assume they were nothing more then fictional characters in the stories of sailors, who are known for telling wild stories, often with no or very little facts behind them.

Atlantis is a different story, weather or not it was actually called Atlantis is up for debate, but there are places that match some of the criteria, and thus could've been used as inspiration for the story. So if Atlantis as a whole like in Platos story existed? Probably not. Did places with striking similarities exist (higher developed civilization in the depicted time frame, that ended up losing(parts of) their city due to a natural disaster involving floods/earthquakes that lowered the city enough to be engulfed in water)? They did, which one(s) of these is/are the inspiration for platos story isn't sure.

They didn't, not the Ariel-type mermaids at least. No pretty human chicks with seashell bras and fishtails. Weren't mermaids manatees?

I wonder if Centaurs existed and if so, how is that they operated much bigger, horse sized body, instead just legs, while retaining human intelligence, when they needed more neurons dedicated to motor control, while having just regular human head and brain.

This is why you shouldn't start threads when you're stoned.
The plural of anecdote is not "data". It's "Bayesian inference".
