[books] looking for a new series to read

I am looking for another book series to read. I recently finished book two of The King Killer Chronicles. Other series I have finished (at least what is currently written) would be Game of Thrones, Wheel of Time, The Dark Tower, LotR, and the Christ Clone Trilogy.

While most of what I've read are fantasy series, I'm game for whatever.

All things Brandon Sanderson. Read The Stormlight Archive. After that, read his mistborn trilogy.

But seriously though, the Stormlight Archive is amazing and my favorite fantasy series. Having read most of the books on your list, this series is the best, even better than game of thrones.

    Bold claims.

Currently reading The Witcher books, they're pretty good, and might even make you want to play the games, which is a plus.

There's so many of these threads, you should just search for them and you'll find a bunch of good suggestions. Couple of books on my to read list though:

    Dune

    The Hungry City Chronicles

    The First Law

    Mistborn

    The Stormlight Archive

    The Kingkiller Chronicle

The Chronicle of the Black Company

    American Gods

    Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn

    Instrumentalities of the Night

    Farseer Trilogy

    Coldfire Trilogy

    The Dagger and The Coin

    Foundation

    The Prince of Nothing

I highly recommend the Shannara series by Terry Brooks. It's been going strong since the late 70s. Nearly 30 books in the series at this point. It starts out feeling a bit like your typical high fantasy (in fact the first book, The Sword of Shannara, is frequently criticized as being a LotR rip-off [and to be fair, it is an apt criticism] ) but it quickly blossoms into its own and is a very engaging read.

Here is the site with the author's suggested reading order: http://terrybrooks.net/novels/reading-orders/

Just a couple notes on it: 1) The books are broken up into several trilogies (with the occasional quadrilogy or duology) and as long as you start with the first book, you can reasonably jump into any trilogy without being completely lost (each trilogy takes place a generation+ in the future/past of other trilogies so while they do take place in the same world and are centered around members of the same family, each trilogy can stand on its own).

    2) There is another trilogy by Brooks, the Word & Void trilogy that is not *technically* a part of the Shannara series, however, if you read all the other books and then this, you will realize that this trilogy is a super-super-super prequel to the series/universe. (I don't want to get too into it because spoilers, but it's very neat).

Also, it's worth noting that the second novel in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara, is being adapted into a tv series [at least one series of it] and will begin airing in January (the show is call The Shannara Chronicles).

Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories, a lot of the trappings of fantasy epics but grounded in real proto-English history, 8 novels so far with the 9th released next month.

If you'd like a shorter, complete series his Warlord Chronicles (3 books) are a retelling of the Arthurian legends with a focus on an authentic historical setting whilst his Grail Quest series is set around the start of the Hundred Years War.

    Couple of space operas.
Galactic Mage series by John Daulton. 6 books, 6th book coming.

On Silver Wings and Odyssey One and its continuation Odyssey One: Rogue by Evan Currie.

Legend of Zero and Fortune by Sara King. Both ongoing.

And Warship and The Omega Force series by Joshua Dalzelle. 7 books so far, 8th on the way.

A giant monster series by Jeremy Robinson, Project Kaiju. Hopefully still ongoing.

And James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell, Order of the Sanguine. Wrapped up trilogy. Or James' Sigma series. Can't remember exact count, but a lot of books with more on the way.

And another that came to mind, another space opera, Slaver Wars and its contiuation Lost Fleets by Raymond L. Weil. 6 books so far.

Jim Butcher. He writes Dresden Files and wrote Codex Alera. These are both some of my favorites in the world.

Stardance by Spider and Jeanne Robinson (first of the series) was good.

This is a true statement. Bold claims indeed, but the Stormlight Archive really is that good. It's a well developed world with a completely unique use of magic and excellent characters. All of them are well developed and easy to fall in love with. I think in someways it IS a better series than A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones.) Here's the caveat to the Stormlight Archive, though: ONLY 2 BOOKS ARE OUT SO FAR!!!!!! Much like Harry Potter, waiting for the next book in such a great series is HORRIBLE!

(Also Dune is incredible as well. The original 6 plus all the books that were written after Frank Herbert died, though a few of the most recently written ones suffer from somewhat weak writing.)
I can teach you how to play, but I can't fix stupid.

Ian M. Bank Culture Novels, I'd start with The Player of Games or Consider Phlebas.

Stephen Brust's Vlad Taltos series isn't quite done (and likely won't be for some years) but is very good and the individual stories are mostly stand alone. I'd say start with either Jhereg (published) or Taltos (chronological, mostly and Cycle).

If you want something a little less standalone, try Julian May's Saga of the Exiles, starting with The Many-Colored Land. (It has the advantage of being done - including a ton of prequels.)

Roger Zelazny's First and Second Chronicles of Amber. Start with Nine Princes in Amber. (Don't read the "prequels" written after his death.)

Other good ones people have mentioned: Coldfire, anything by Glen Cook, Farseer, Dune (Herbert only, original trilogy is the best). Of everything that's been mentioned in the thread, Sword of Truth stands out as not worth the time it takes to read, imnsho. Actually, that's an understatement I read Wizard's First Rule years ago and it stuck with me as one of the worst books I have ever read, certainly the worst SF book.
"In today’s America, conservatives who actually want to conserve are as rare as liberals who actually want to liberate. The once-significant language of an earlier era has had the meaning sucked right out of it, the better to serve as camouflage for a kleptocratic feeding frenzy in which both establishment parties participate with equal abandon" (Taking a break from the criminal, incompetent liars at the NSA, to bring you the above political observation, from The Archdruid Report.)

The Otherland series by Tad Williams is one of my favorite series ever. It's a really dense series that follows a bunch of different characters from all over the world as they are all drawn together. It's a sci-fi/cyberpunk series with bits of fantasy tossed in. The central plot involves the creation of a virtual reality system that in indistinguishable from reality created in secret by a group made up of the most powerful people in the world and how it may be linked to a bunch of kids going into unexplained and incurable comas. It is four pretty lengthy novels long and a good part of the first book is just set up to introduce the world and all the various characters, but once past that, it is a really great read. The bulk of the series takes place inside the Otherland network that is made up of a series of connected worlds each with their own theme and rules from a world based on Egyptian mythology, to one that is a twisted version of the Wizard of Oz, to one that is a medieval fantasy world based on chess. I highly recommend checking it out. The first book is called City of Golden Shadow https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/..._Golden_Shadow

I haven't read the Stormlight Archive books yet (will likely wait a few years for a few more books in the series to be finished before I start in on them), but I have read Mistborn and a number of other Sanderson books. He is far and away my favorite fantasy author now. The Mistborn series is absolutely fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fantasy trilogy to read.
