Do you think we will ever change the Sex Offender Registry?

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/03/us/dat...try/index.html

I just saw the above and thought it was pretty absurd. A 19 year old guy hooked up with what he though was a 17 year old girl in an online app (she had told him she was 17). They met and had sex. It was found out later that the girl was actually 14 and the guy was arrested, tried, convicted. He spent 90 days in jail and will now spend the next 25 years on the Sex Offender Registry, he has also been forced to move out of his parents house because it is illegal for him to live there since his younger brother is only 15 years old.

What's more is both the girl and even her mother testified in favor of the guy during his trial, with the girl apologizing profusely for lying about her age and claiming everything was consensual, but both the lying about her age and the fact that everything was consensual were irrelevant under current laws.

The article went on to say that around a quarter of all people on the Sex Offender Registry were added when teenagers. Many agree, however, that it is unlikely the laws will change anytime soon because no politician would support putting forward an amendment or law that would relax punishment against sex crimes.

So yeah, do you think we will ever change these laws?

Yeah, the rules involving underage kids are truly absurd. You can't tell me the chick didn't know what she was doing, but that's exactly what these rules try to do.

The Sex Offender Registry serves a purpose, and I do support it. But these types of situations are NOT it.

its his fault for having premarital sex.

if you want to have sex with a 14 year old you need to marry her first.

I have a friend who went through a similar issue, via a fake id years ago. The system is broken beyond belief. 14 year old black male can be charged as an adult for a crime but a 15 year old girl has no accountability.

That is apparently what the judge thought as well.

I read about this and statutory rape has been a problem for ever. Each of the 50 states has their own laws making it even more difficult, the progressive states saying 18 is the year of consent and the backwards states saying 14. Some states don't care what the age is as long as the participants are within a year of each other.

It's confusing and I don't think anything can be done about it.

It's up to the person, yes usually the male to make sure the girl is of legal age. Ask for ID if you're not sure.

I may have missed it in the article, but how did anyone find out about their consensual act? Usually in these cases, it's the parents of the underage party that tend to make a fuss, but it seems the mother of the underage party was supportive. Also, it takes 10 seconds to check someone's ID.

Hopefully not, I wish such a thing would be implemented in Sweden as well.

someone probably bragged somewhere, thats how most people typically get caught. and why stop at ID? its super easy to fake an ID. if you dont ask all your sexual partners for a notarized birth certificate and the signing of a consent form under presence of a standing judge then youre just asking to go to jail

I think the idea is a good one for things like rapists, acting pedophiles etc. but it's absolutely retarded when it comes to things like this. Lost count how many times I've seen people get labeled a sex-offender for life because a girl lied about her age, or because evenenly aged young couples had sex. It doesn't help when you have judges like this, punishing people because he doesn't personally agree with casual sex.

The girl left without telling anyone and the mother became worried and called the police when she couldn't find her.

No one is arguing the registry be done away with, but many think there should be a risk assessment associated with being listed on it, with only those who are deemed a risk to society after review being listed on it.

As it stands now, anyone convicted of any sex crime of any degree is listed on it. This 19 year old, who pleaded guilty to a 4th degree (lowest felony) criminal sexual conduct charge is listed right next to child rapists and will continue to be there for the next 25 years...

If BS like that happened to me, I'd move out of the country as fast as possible

the idea behind the list isn't too shabby, but the way it is now it's a bad joke, and the laugh is on you.

14 years old this days look and dress like they are 18+ plus so it's damn hard sometimes to be sure.

Then again this is sweden where you get community service for raping 12 years old's.

Apparently my city is like a landing zone for the perverts, the state is moving them in from all over the place.

That will teach him to touch 3DPD!

As numbers of people on it increase due to teenagers getting charged for child porn for sexting things might change.
Would likely take someone dying, either several suicides due to it ruining lives or deaths due to people using it for vigilante "justice".

Why are there no public lists and additional restrictions for things like meth producers. Those who make false rape accusations should be required to registers and fall under the same restrictions.

That's part of the problem too. No matter the degree or circumstance you are penalized the same. Often a small vote or complaint causes them to have to find new residence which is costly and taxing.
