I just saw the above and thought it was pretty absurd. A 19 year old guy hooked up with what he though was a 17 year old girl in an online app (she had told him she was 17). They met and had sex. It was found out later that the girl was actually 14 and the guy was arrested, tried, convicted. He spent 90 days in jail and will now spend the next 25 years on the Sex Offender Registry, he has also been forced to move out of his parents house because it is illegal for him to live there since his younger brother is only 15 years old.
What's more is both the girl and even her mother testified in favor of the guy during his trial, with the girl apologizing profusely for lying about her age and claiming everything was consensual, but both the lying about her age and the fact that everything was consensual were irrelevant under current laws.
The article went on to say that around a quarter of all people on the Sex Offender Registry were added when teenagers. Many agree, however, that it is unlikely the laws will change anytime soon because no politician would support putting forward an amendment or law that would relax punishment against sex crimes.
So yeah, do you think we will ever change these laws?
