What is fact is that: a) Aethas knew of the theft; b) Kirin Tor resources were used; and c) there was a Sunreaver traitor. By opting to no go to the council and blow the whistle on what was going on, and since he knew of Jaina's trauma, he was the pivotal character in causing the 'Purge'.

Aethas greatly misjudged Jaina. But her wrath was still much preferable to Garrosh's.
