You can have $5 Million or $50 Million but with a catch.

Ok you have a choice here to walk away with a lot of money no matter what, but the question is how much is up to you. Your options are you can receive $5 million right now and walk away minus taxes or you can gamble it on a coin toss you get to choose heads or tails. If you guess correctly you get $50 million free and clear no taxes, but if you lose you walk away with $2.5 million minus taxes what would you choose?

I would take the $50 million option, gotta live with some risk!

  3. #3
Do you offer the same to four other people?
If yes I would make a deal with them and then we would all take the 50 million.

The gamble. Net present value is $26.25M, vs. the net present value of $5M in the other option.

Plus, the "consolation prize" is still pretty damn good.

Now if the gamble were $100M or $1, I'd take the $5M, because the $1 is basically no good to me.

And there they lay I damn me eyes

Seems like there's no losing in your scenario.

I go with the $5million. Its a sure thing, yeah taxes get taken out but still.
I don't have a problem with free stuff, let alone a free $5million

Go for the coin toss, worse case I would still walk away with $2.5 million more than I have right now. Also I'm in Canada so I wouldn't have to pay taxes on it.

With my taxes, its about 2'5 million both options.
Also, at 2.5 my life would be just as i like it, going to 5 doesn't matter, so gamble away.

Honestly this question would be better if it was $5m guaranteed or the option to roll for $50m but if you lose you get nothing.

The sure thing, $5m, isn't that much more from the $2.5m to discourage the risk.

That's a good point no wrong answer, but to me a sure thing is better than the risk of much less.

I can live a nice life for a while with 2.5 million. So I'd go for the gamble. What's life without a little risk?

You convoluted the question with the tax thing and the consolation price of 50% for the second option.

I really don't get why you put it in there.

The bet is weighted in our favor by far, it's a rate of 19 to 1 with a 1/1 chance.

I'd take the 5 million. It'd be a hard choice, but if I'd lost on the bet it'd bother me forever.

$5 million is enough money for me to live comfortable for the rest of my life if handled well.

Take the gamble. 2.5mil is more than enough for me so if I win, I can give it to good causes.

2.5 million is too good to pass up as a consolation

Well the taxes represent the penalty of life. The reason I made the gamble give you at least half with the same penalty is because I wanted to eliminate the risk of walking away with nothing.

The reason the $50 million is tax free is because it's the rig so to speak.
