Kids aren't as picky as adults when it comes to things having perfect finishes. Just a plain coat of paint on the wood is good enough for them.

My only problem with building something like this is I have no garage to build it in, and most of the tools I would have used with my father as a kid are things I don't own. This would be a lot easier to build, for example, with a proper table saw.
