    Thoughts on this build?

    Thanks in advance!

I work in IT, but haven't built a rig in about 10 years, so I'm rusty on the finer details. I'd love some feedback about the parts, any red flags, if my expectations are realistic, and whatever else you can share.

    Budget: about $1100
    Resolution: 1680 x 1050
Games / Settings Desired: Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Max at 60 FPS
Any other intensive software or special things you do (Frequent video encoding, 3D modeling, etc): none
    Country: US
Parts that can be reused: storage, PSU
Do you need an OS? no
Do you need peripherals (e.g. monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc)?no

I want 16GB of RAM because I leave a lot of tabs and programs open and switch between them often. I'd also like to OC while keeping the CPU under 75C.

    Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor - $229.99
Corsair H100i GTX 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler - $109.99
    MSI Z97-GAMING 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard - $144.89
    Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory - $74.99
Asus GeForce GTX 980 4GB STRIX Video Card - $459.99
Fractal Design Define S ATX Mid Tower Case - $69.99

When you say you can re-use storage you mean just hdd or ssd as well?

Assuming you don't have an ssd, the list below is like the best i could come with around that price range. The gpu is overkill tho, same goes for gtx980. I just showed you what you can "reach" with the budget. Optimally for your resolution, a gtx970 is what it should be in there which will save you some money as well.

I have an SSD boot drive and HDD data drives. I've also got an 850W PSU.

I should have said that I want the option to support higher resolutions if I eventually get a new monitor.

For the sake a learning how you pick your parts:
    Why that CPU?
    Why that MB?
    Why that RAM?

    Simple answers:
    - Cpu is the new gen and the one to go for gaming, quad core with highest stock clock and unlocked for overclocking. You don't need an i7 since you only do gaming.
    - Motherboard has most features, or rather more, than the average user needs. Has the new usb 3.1, nice audio, many sata connectors etc etc, most importantly good quality for the money.
    - As for the ram, well there isn't much to say for it, was almost the cheapest, from respectable company, low profile and at 2400Mhz@cas14.

So, here's what I've switched it up to. Thoughts?

Going in on the 980 Ti over instead of Skylake.

980ti with a 1680 x 1050 monitor? You might want to look in to a new monitor.

For 1080p not even 1050p, the build is worse than the one i gave you. Previous gen, more expensive while it doesn't include ssd/psu which you are re-using so my build is even cheaper.

You grab a gtx980ti, it runs your x game at 200fps while you can only experience 60fps@1050p. Seems like a waste of money.

Also whats the exact model of your psu and how old is it?

Assuming you re-use ssd and psu i will give you a better perspective, keeping skylake with a nice 1440p monitor with a little more than what you would spend above in your list.

Forgot to say that I plan to game at 1440 in the next 12 months. The PSU is a Rosewill Xtreme Series RX950-D-B 950W. I forget how old it is.

I wouldn't re-use that psu then. That came out around 2008 and was selling mostly from then till 2010 and its capacitors (teapo) weren't very good to start with.
