China says must make $315 billion - $630 billion green investments per year

China must make green investments of between 2 trillion and 4 trillion yuan ($315-630 billion) per year over the next five years, but the government can only cover 15 percent of that, China's central bank deputy governor, Yi Gang, said on Thursday.

"Most of the finance has to come from the private sector, so we have to provide a positive incentive mechanism," Yi said on the sidelines of International Monetary Fund meetings in Lima.

Earlier this week, China confirmed it would launch a nationwide "cap-and-trade" program in 2017 to force big greenhouse gas emitters to buy credits to meet pollution reduction targets. Carbon market schemes aim in part to encourage low-carbon investments.

China will also make "green finance" a top priority of the Group of 20 when it takes up the G20 chair next year, Yi said.

"If we don't have international cooperation, we will find that investment in the green sector will be underinvested," Yi said. "The G20 platform is a good platform."

A new green finance committee in China is writing a "very important chapter" on environmental protection and sustainable growth for the country's next five-year plan, Yi added.

China is the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases.

China is on it's way to being the greatest producer of greenhouse gasses by far. I don't know why some say that China should get a pass, that they should be allow to increase global warming because the Chinese economy is growing.

Within a few years, China will be the richest economy in the world.

Largest economy != Richest economy. China's going to remain solidly middle-income (with a large underclass of low-income) for decades, by even the most wildly optimistic projections for China.

Most countries don't reach the emission targets they agree too. On the other hand china is known to be one of the biggest investors in green tech in the world. So dunno if china is all that bad, they certainly seem to be trying harder then most others.

this site says that china invested $83b, the US $38b and Japan $35b being the top 3 investors globallyin 2014. Now china is going to quintuple that? yeah i don't think anyone can point fingers.

(on the other hand, china is emits a lot more then the EU and US then i thought they did, i thought US and china would be roughly equal in emissions. but this data is from 2010 and china has invested a lot more into green energy since then, as seen by the previous site. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._gas_emissions)
