Is Halloween just the best 'holiday' ever?

Okay, so it doesn't officially count as a holiday, since it doesn't have time off, but I was thinking when looking around town at all the halloween decorations, that when it comes down to it, this really is a great 'holiday', or celebration.

Its at a great time of year, its freezing cold in mid winter, but just on the outskirts of it so you have that great autumnal light, golden leaves falling, and no ice on roads or anything.
At halloween, you don't have to think about buying presents for anyone, if your feeling festive all you need is a tub of sweets of treat or treaters, or not if you really don't want to, and the best part is you can finish off the leftover candy.
You don't have to sit and watch boring christmas movies, instead its an excuse to find great horror movies to watch.
If your so inclined, you can go to a halloween party, which just has better costumes then any other holiday, and at night like a party should.

There is no cooking, no wrapping things up, the only decorations are usually pumpkins which can be creative.

And you only need throw them out the next day.

There is no spending hundreds on things each year like christmas, no need to visit relatives you don't want to see, and all in all it had something for everyone. Infact the only thing I can think some people might find awkward is if you have children having to design them costumes and take them around neighbors houses for treats, but when then its a good excuse to show off your costume making skills and shove it in their faces.

Overrated. Just like Christmas and the likes. It's not even about what people believe it is.

    Yes.

Halloween is not celebrated in any sort of big way outside North America I believe. There might be some other countries where it's popular, but around here, I barely notice it.

We got a much more amazing event in Norway called "Julebukk", which translates into Yule Goat (Wiki link), where we as kids dressed as small elves and stuff and got candy. No pressure on kids to buy expensive Halloween costumes, as we just took what we had and dressed up. Then we sang Christmas songs all over town, and got candy, nuts and what not in return.
Then Halloween came, and it was so much "cooler" to dress like Spiderman, a Witch or what ever.. Sad.

Halloween is just some American shit, that ups the sales in stores by putting some "scary Halloween" theme on stuff. Fuck that shit.

    Edit

Also the origin of Julebukk is much coler, something about sacrificing a goat for some pegan stuff. And something about walking about with a goat mask and a fury coat, doing stuff. I suck at wording my self in English when I am tired..

Also more grown ups do the Julebukk, they do however get one drink at each house, not sure if people do that anymore? I'm from a small town, so it was more common there, never heard of people doing it in bigger towns though.

The day after Halloween is much better. One of the two best holidays in the year. The other one is the day after Easter.

I call it "cheap candy day". It comes twice a year!

A modern twist of a Christianized Celtic pagan holiday to honor the dead. Or in other words, an excuse to have fun!

Most of what we refer to as modern Halloween has actually been around for several hundred years (trick or treating, dressing up, scary decorations etc).

    1. Buy sweets for trick or treaters.
    2. Turn lights off and shut curtains.
    3. Eat sweets.

I wouldn't say it's the best ever, though it's certainly my favorite.

We don't celebrate it in Sweden. There is only one thing that is frowned upon more than Jehovah's witnesses and that's trick or treating. The only people who will open the door around these parts are senile elders and pedophiles and if you dare to pull a prank then you better be Usain Bolt.

I love Halloween. Would love it more if more television channels would actually do horror marathons or special horror-theme episodes for the holiday, but precious few do (and yet they all go nuts for Christmas...).

Nope, Christmas is for sure. Brings family together unlike anything else.
