USA: melting pot or salad bowl?

Which one of these two well-known metaphors best reflects Americal society and culture? A melting pot or a salad bowl? How much cultural assimilaiton is there?

The real question is - will it blend?

Heard melting pot. Pretty sure a salad bowl is not a thing.

It's a melting pot, you've just missed the melting of other cultures together part probably.

my experience it's more a salad bowl. no one claims they are American, its always german, or chinese or hispanic, or somali people here expect others to adapt to them, they don't adapt to others

I suppose salad bowl is more appropriate. But salad has dressing on it that defines its flavour to a large extent. American culture is like dressing.

Yes it is a melting pot and once latinos are a majority they wont have the leftist white guilt that is ruining the country.

I'd say melting pot. You have Hispanics celebrating St Patrick's day. Whites celebrate cinco de mayo. Also Vhinese New year is getting to be a bigger thing.

There's also Tex Mex which is a mix of both foodie stuffs. We blend pretty well culturally. We have our own identities but we celebrate other identities as well

Yeah, I am an American . That is all I need to say really I am not Irish American,Scottish American ...just American. Yes, it is a misnomer...but...we have a lot of those here so...

    Hi, I am an American.

It is a melting pot, it was made that way and should continue to be so.

The salad concept, while amusing (never heard it before this thread) is not really what it is "supposed" to be.

It is more a Buffet line anyway, salad is what our food eats

Exactly. People taking pride in where they came from heritage wise doesn't change how the US culture actually is.

    It's a slowly decomposing salad.

Everything starts out distinct, but it all ends up the same eventually.

It depends on whether you're vegan or a normal human being.
