    Hard discs are under added stress when booting up because they have to spin up first. If your drive is about to fail it will be more likely to show signs of that while booting.

    This does _not_ mean that your data is safe if you don't reboot. If your drive shows signs of failure it's only a matter of time until it will also start failing while it's running.

    You absolutely need to back up your data _right now_ if you want to keep it. If you can't afford it you have to prepare yourself for a hard drive failure within a week or two (at which point you need to buy a replacement anyway, might as well do that now).

    When CPUs and RAM have an expected life-span of over 20 years, and SSDs and HDDs usually become technically obsolete before they physically die, whether or not you turn your PC on or off at night (or when you aren't using it for an extended period of time) becomes more a question of convenience (and electricity saving).
