    America.

    Cause America.

For real though, for all the people hating on Americans, the USA is not a bad place to live. I am not sure what it is like in Scotland, but I have heard people having a decent opinion about the states once they actually live here.

Hate our government all you want, but there are still very interesting and diverse locations in the united states. New York might be an interesting place, since you mentioned it.

If you're planning on moving to a different country I'd suggest taking some of that money you're intending to use for your move and visit it first. Something may look good on paper or on the Internet but when you get there it might not be your cup of tea.

It's not nearly as exciting or enjoyable as they make it seem in movies/photos. Your longing for it will cease very quickly, this I can assure you.

I would love to live abroad one day as well. The approach i do is as following; How is their healthcare. How is their treatment of its citizens (If you need help do you actually get taken seriously). How is their social behaviour (too caught up in moral or religion? I love people who can think for themselves). Is it a overall genuine and non-corrupt country. If i get children and a wife, how would their situation and well-being look like in that society (children are vulerable, women needs to be able to live their dreams). And so forth. You get where i am going.

In my case i have found that either The Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, Australia or Canada is interesting choices
In my eyes mid and Southern-europe seems to be really stuck up their own arse with their way of being and traditions. Eastern-europe is corrupt as fuck. Asia is messed up. The Middle-east is messed up. Africa is messed up. America is messed up. South-america is messed up. Russia is messed up.

You should probably do some significant research into the requirements for moving to a new country. It isn't as easy as just up and moving there. That alone could narrow down your choices. Then, as suggested, go visit it with an eye for living rather than vacationing.

Not to be a killjoy or anything but generally immigrating requires employment, so if that isn't secure then you probably need to start there.

Unless you're sponsored and a skilled worker, you ain't going to the states. They have no working holiday visa program that other countries do (eg: Canada, Australia). That said, these types of work holiday visas are usually reciprocal agreements between nations. I don't know what is available to the Scots in that regard.

Forgive my ignorance but is Scotland an EU member? If so, you bave a LOT of Europe open to you and you are free to live and work in any of these member nations without a visa. It's so good.

I like Minneapolis. Having traveled extensively around the world, there are few places I'd rather live. I have family in Sweden, and it's very similar to Stockholm, only we speak English more. We get snow most years, and some weeks in January it can be quite cold (-28 C). It has fairly low crime, nice people, a good diversified economy, and is rich in culture and night life. It's value system is also quite European (higher tax, more social services). It's also nicely located for travel, both to Europe and the Americas. Chicago is close enough for weekend road trips.

Before committing, you should try an extended two week plus visit to the place. Maybe give AirBNB or couch surfing a try to actually meet up with locals.

This is very good advice, also OP, this is something I have been looking into as well and Japan is one my top countries that I would love to move to ( I am from the UK as well), however I will be travelling to japan for a 4 week holiday, this will let me see a glimmer of what the country is like.

One thing that has cropped in my head was, as you and me are from the UK, whats the biggest difference, the biggest change would be not having the NHS, this is a bigger deal then you think since the NHS is extremely good and most in the UK take it for granted.

The UK also has strong consumer protection laws compared to most countries and in all fairness, we get fairer rates on stuff compared to a lot of countries thanks to this, stuff like this is something you want to take into consideration coming from the UK.

This depends on the person though. I live in a part of Canada that gets a decent amount of snow and every December i look forward to it, i find that sunny bright with white snow is way better than dark and damp winters, gets a bit old by March but then its almost over anyway and your excited for spring by then but I generally like seasons, summer makes you appreciate winter and winter makes you appreciate summer, keeps it interesting, would hate to be somewhere where the weather is so stale. Also a lot of whether it feels cold or not depends on how much wind there is and how damp it is. -15 if its A dry cold with no wind really isn't so bad if you have good clothes... some of that coastal damp winter wind can chill you to the bone even if its above freezing.

Scotland is not an independent nation. It's part of the UK. UK is an EU member.

EU citizens are free to travel and stay (for up to 3 months) within EU countries. But they are not free to live in another EU nation without additional requirements.

Japan is pretty cool as well, if you are rich... otherwise they have a pretty weird work ethic. (think semi-slave labor)
I have looked into prices in Japan, its comparable to the UK in terms of prices, in fact, local food stuff is cheaper in Japan then the UK.

Rent seems the same, tokyo would be comparable to London, you know capitol city to capitol city but my research so far shows that Japan prices are much cheaper then the UK for general stuff.

Edit. This page says you guys can work anywhere in the EU. To me, that also means you can live anywhere.
