Unfortunately it only gets worse, cause the further you progress in your degree, the less each class is offered and the more likely they are to interfere and be at inconvenient times. Can anyone intelligent explain to me the illiterate mess that White Hills Like Elephants is? So far, after three complete reads, it's complete nonsense with two "humans" speaking in a way that only convinces me that maybe Hemingway spent far too much time in the bush and forgot how people normally interact with each other.

So apparently Hemingway's writing style is referred to as "Iceberg Theory". After looking up more information on it, I can't help but stop and wonder a few things. For starters, what is the purpose of being so vague, of hiding most of the story under the water? I expect some things are left unsaid in other works, but this is just ridiculous.
I think it's quite overrated, if only because I can smell Hemingway sitting at his typewriter giggling to himself about how much he could make for such a work of "genius". Indeed, there is some more advanced knowledge required to understand the writing (such as the Siamese white elephant myth), but why bother with it? I can handle symbolism in other works because other works have work to them. This just seems incredibly lazy at first glance--passing off all of the work of figuring out what the hell is going on to the reader--and slightly malicious after more thorough thought.
But who am I to question the literary world, I suppose. I'm only a 20-something who still lives with his parents. I just find that a lot of celebrated works amongst literary circles are only celebrated because of some imagined prestige gained from being able to put in a little bit of effort into reading.
