Should I cast DP when a DP is active on target?

I always thought you should never cast your DP on your target when it already has a DP on. You have to wait till it falls off to recast. Don't know why but is it a DPS loss if I reapply it when the DP is active? Would the same rules apply to CoP or AS?

You can safely overwrite a DP with another DP without losing damage. The remaining damage from the previous DP will be added to the fresh debuff ticks. It basically delay your damage. It is very nice for AS but I don't see any usage with COP.
