There are a lot of fluff (and admittedly fun) threads here asking what our favorite food, vacation, book, game, villain, or whatever is. Those are all fine and good and I'll continue trolling along in them as I see fit, but I find I learn a lot more about people through the things that aren't shared quite as easily. Learning you prefer Dr. Pepper to Orange soda doesn't make me know how you tick, you know?
Well, what is the most difficult decision you've made in your life?
I believe I made mine recently. I'm moving away from everyone and everything I've ever known to pursue professional (and hopefully financial) dreams of mine. I'm single, in my 20's, and have no children so one might think I have no real attachments so it must be easy, but it's not. Social media isn't as effective as a tool to keep people together as we like to pretend it is, and if I visit it will be just that...a visit. If I ever move back, it will be years later and everyone will be in a different stage in their life. In short, nothing will ever be the same, and that can be scary. However, I would rather do this than wonder for the next 50 years what would be if I made the plunge and moved 1000 miles from anything I ever knew by myself.
It's hard, but I think it's right.
Care to share? I always find stories like this fascinating!

I gave up tobacco at one point. The decision wasn't hard, doing it was the hardest thing I've ever done.

Choosing to put my dreams on hold and stick out a 7 year long education, rather than go for a job right away.
made this choice when i was 18
Luckily it's paying off, just finished my education and got a great job in software development

The two most difficult decisions I've ever made have been breaking up with a girl I loved because I just couldn't stand her emotional swings (she had some kind of mental illness and she wasn't trying to manage it, so it was extremely difficult to deal with) and moving on from the one girl who I would've spent the rest of my life with if she would've wanted it. Great relationship, but not as fulfilling as we both wanted (or needed?) it to be.

Turning my back on certain friends and family. I don't regret it now but at the time it was a very difficult decision. To make a long story short they just weren't there for me when I needed them most and proved to be very nasty and toxic.

Probably choosing my profession (i.e. the university program). I was really split between physics and math, and had a strong interest in history as well. History wasn't going to give me an easy way to immigrate to the country I wanted to, so I really was choosing between physics and math. Was leaning on math and preparing for the entrance exams on math, but somewhere on the way (a few months before the exams) I realized that I probably wouldn't survive decades of theorems, proofs, mind-numbing hard concepts: the real math turned out to be quite different from school math. So I switched to physics. Never regretted it.
