There Won't Be a Big New Assassin's Creed Game This Year but Next Year

    Egypt huh?
    http://www.gamespot.com/articles/the.../1100-6433500/

Since the release of Assassin's Creed II in 2009, we've gotten a new entry in the core franchise every year (alongside spinoffs, in the case of most recent years). That won't be the case again this year, as a new report suggests that Ubisoft will skip 2016 in favor of a 2017 release for a new game set in Egypt.

News of this first cropped up on 4chan (via NeoGAF), where an alleged developer claimed the new game would be "a complete revamp of the series" featuring "a Witcher feel, with player progression" and a "freeform combat system." Kotaku has since corroborated some of these details, saying the game is currently called Assassin's Creed Empire and could signal a bi-annual release schedule for the series going forward. It also says the hole in Ubisoft's fall schedule could be filled by Watch Dogs 2, which is reportedly set in San Francisco.

According to the 4chan poster, the new Assassin's Creed protagonist is either a "slave or ex-slave" with a pet eagle that players are able to control. (Ubisoft recently announced a VR game where you fly over Paris as an eagle, for what it's worth.) It's also said to contain "a lot more story" than the other games and is much more colorful.

When reached for comment, Ubisoft declined to offer any clarification. "We can't comment on rumor or speculation," a spokesperson told GameSpot. "We're always happy when players are excited about our games, past, present, and future. In the meantime, we hope that the latest images from the Assassin's Creed movie set will keep fans of the franchise happy and eager to find out more!"

Should the next big Assassin's Creed indeed skip 2016, it won't mean it's punting on this year entirely. The next entry in the side-scrolling Assassin's Creed Chronicles series, India, is due out next week, and will be followed by Russia next month. The upcoming film, meanwhile, will be out in December.

That Ubisoft should move away from its annual release cycle wouldn't be hugely surprising after, by the publisher's own admission, Unity's messy release in 2014 impacted sales of 2015's Syndicate.

We may have a better idea of the publisher's plans for the series when it shares its earnings report for the third quarter on Thursday, February 12. Stay tuned.

its just odd how Ubisoft is trying to copy COD. Glad they made this move. Let them actually make a polished assassins creed.

I mean Cod is a shorter game, its mostly multiplayer, and does not need as much work as an Assassins creed game when you look at it

Also COD has 3 developers working on different entries so its not the same group making the series year after year.

It's not the same people making AC every year either... AC games are in development for 3+ years before release not a single year even when they're yearly releases.

Omg omg omg Watch Dogs 2?!?!?!? Yay. (Inc. Hate from PC players.)

Egypt sounds dumb. Where are you going to free run? One time on a pyramid and then you get to walk in a wasteland of sand?

Cool, I'd be more than happy for a new AC every 2/3 years that was on a level of quality with AC2/Brotherhood/Black Flag instead of getting games like Revalations/3 every year.

And I'm a big fan of the Egypt idea, I can't wait to start hunting around in tombs!

Havent played an AC game since the AC2 games. Blackflag looks like fun because of the ship but meh. The combat is so boring.

Nope, only duty-free pyramids, sand and beaches.

On the other hand I don't find Egyptian architecture somewhat interesting. Pyramids and huge palaces are nice but average cities are very similar to what we saw in the first game ( Jerusalem, Damascus etc ), it's all grey-brown dusty clay houses.

Well if it's any close to what we can see in Asterix and Obelix I think they might have something interesting to play with.

I would gladly return to Italy for Roman Legion to be a legionnaire that goes against Caesar or play as a member of oppressed Gallic tribe (like it was with Connor in AC3) if we speak about this time period.

I still want an AC game set in feudal Japan or even China. Egypt sounds good though.

I really hope they change up some mechanics. While I enjoy the series, it gets harder and harder to get through them to all being the same (although I did enjoy Syndicate much more than Unity).

They've let you play a pirate in Black Flag. The fact that they aren't letting you go full ninja in Japan boggles my mind.

Lololol yes yes I took history class too and know about the four rivers that made Egypt great and "mesopatamia" and all that.

But it's still an open world game. Last AC game London was one big blob of a map and it sucked. Black Flag they had an open world that was really possible because of the ocean and sailing. In 3 they had cities separated by the "wilderness" which was just some patches of trees in a forest.

I think Egypt's layout would be more akin to AC3 and connecting the cities will seem hard. I just think it'll be poorly done is all.

Of course it will be poorly done, it's an AC game lol. Shallow combat with "stealth" and freerunning. Change locations and bam! NEW GAME!

Egypt sounds interesting, but what piqued my attention in this thread was Watchdogs 2. Didn't the original bomb?

    lol, no.

Just because the internet got in a hissy over a "downgrade" doesn't mean something bombed. It was the top selling new IP of all time when it came out, until Destiny beat that number.

It's over 10 million combined on consoles, near 600k on steam and no way to track the non steam versions of the game only in uplay. That's pretty far from a "bomb".
