When is it appropriate to say that word?

I am a caucazoid and like many Caucasians I often find myself enjoying urban music. Most recently I found myself enjoying the latest offering from Dr. Dre "compton". I was rather caught up in it and found myself singing along. Their is of course frequent use a particular slur that has some racially charged overtones. The "n" word. The question I have and this is directed mostly at African members of our community, is it appropriate for me to sing or rap the the "n" word in any context? Would you personally be offended if friends of other ethnicities would sing or tap lyrics expressing that word? Is their a social convention around that particular word and if so what is appropriate and what isn't?

I won't say it at work or around work people or employees... but I personally wouldn't see a problem with singing along in a song. But I'm not black so there is that.

I asked a couple of my black friends once. They were actually more offended that I asked them. They advised me that what really drove them nuts was when people would skip over that word.
