Germany's Merkel says refugees must return home once war is over

I guess she was surprised by the negative reaction of voters?

German Chancellor Angela Merkel tried on Saturday to placate the increasingly vocal critics of her open-door policy for refugees by insisting that most refugees from Syria and Iraq would go home once the conflicts there had ended.

Despite appearing increasingly isolated, Merkel has resisted pressure from some conservatives to cap the influx of refugees, or to close Germany's borders.

Support for her conservative bloc has slipped as concerns mount about how Germany will integrate the 1.1 million migrants who arrived last year, while crime and security are also in the spotlight after a wave of assaults on women in Cologne at New Year by men of north African and Arab appearance.

The influx has played into the hands of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), whose support is now in the double digits, and whose leader was quoted on Saturday saying that migrants entering illegally should, if necessary, be shot.

This isn't capitulation. This is expected of refugees. Once the thing that prevents them from being in their homeland is no longer occurring, they go back.

Hahahaha, and when exactly will the war in the middle east end? Only Russia actively fights ISIS but they also support Assad - which is one of the reasons the immigrants left.

So okay, once ISIS is gone as well as Asaad, the immigrants will probably go back. Easy, no?

pointless statement since the war in Syria is going to go on for atleast another decade.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

I half expect people to demand refugees return to their war torn countries NOW.

There are peace talks on the horizon. Once a political resolution can be found vis a vis Assad (Russia has been distancing itself from him from a while) there can be a more concerted effort to remove Isis from Syria.

Most refugees go back home because they are hosted on refugee camps, where their life is, for all intents and purposes, put on hold - no job, no house, etc.
If you host refugees by enmeshing them into your country's social fabric, by housing them in apartments in your towns, by giving them jobs in your companies, by turning them into consumers for your shops, then you cannot expect in them the same drive to return home. They are, in effect, starting a new life, not putting their old one on hold.

To hold the view that what is happening in Germany and other north-european countries is standard fare as far as refugees go, is to be so obtuse you might as well be openly asking for trouble. "Please, cause me trouble".

Just stop the bullshit. They are no longer refugees. They are now migrants, foreigners living in your country and looking to integrate into the workforce. That IS what they are, even if Merkel and others refuse to see it. It is how the refugees see themselves, after all. They all went to Germany "for better life, get job, help family", none of them I can remember saying "just to hang out until it's safe to return".

Hasn't happened here. It's stupid to think you'll be able to deport everyone.

Meanwhile, all the refugees will have babies born on EU turf and have legal reasons to stay... such is the commonly abused method. Why break tradition?

They most likely applied for Visas etc... The state isn't compelled to accept everyone and realistically can't considering the huge amount of people.

Does that work in Germany? In the UK it's really difficult for the baby to get British citizenship if neither of the parents are British citizens.

Edit: Apparently Germany requires one of the parents to have been resident in Germany for at least 8 years and be entitled to permanent residence.

There wasn't that many people from Vietnam though. About 1,500 people.

Which is most likely why a lot of them were permitted to stay.

Merkel always said that refugees had to return home once their country was save. Remember the time she made a refugee girl cry on tv and suddenly had to face a shitstorm? It was because she told her this simple truth.

Yap, Unlike the US Germany does not have a territorial citizenship. The refugees could fuck around like rabbits and it would change nothing.
