Obese women experience much more negative social stigma than previously thought

Women who are obese experience many more incidents of stigmatization because of their weight — an average of three incidents a day — than previous research has reported, according to a study published in the Feb. issue of the Journal of Health Psychology.

Past research has tended to suggest that people who are overweight or obese experience negative weight-related stigmatization only a few times during their entire lives.

Those studies relied, however, on asking people to recall any past experiences with weight-related stigmatization. This new study had women keep contemporaneous diaries.

As background information in the current study explains, the stigmatization of overweight people has increased significantly over the past two decades. These negative attitudes have disproportionally been aimed at women, even though the rates of obesity are similar for both men and women.

Weight-related stigmatization can take many forms, such as interpersonal (being ridiculed or shamed for your size), institutional (not getting a job or promotion because of your size), or physical barriers (not being able to find clothes that fit or chairs in theaters or restaurants that can accommodate your body).
Such stigmatization has been linked to low self-esteem and increased rates of depression, but it can also have physical and health consequences. People who report weight-related stigmatization are more likely, for example, to become binge eaters and to avoid exercise and other healthful habits.

For these reasons, say the current study’s authors, it’s important to get a better understanding of both the frequency and nature of this particular social stigma.
    Insightful examples

The open-ended entries in the diary offer some insight into what daily life is often like for people who are obese:

“With friends at a baby shower. Went to McDonald’s first so people wouldn’t look at me eating more than I should.”

“Teenagers made animal sounds [moo] outside of a store I was in.”

“I was told what a bad mother I am because I can’t set limits as to what my son or his friends eat during sleepovers, because I can’t even control myself.”

“Boyfriend’s mother denied me access to food, also stated that I was so fat because I was lazy.”

What do you think the solution to this is?
One idea is that women should avoid becoming this overweight in the first place/

How about instead of complaining about insults they change their diets and try to improve their bodies.

    Yeah!
Isn't the idea to use the insults as motivation? You hear it all the time from successful people.

You don't understand. That require more work and effort. It's easier to be a victim. Victim mentality is infecting this generation badly.

Are you a member of some troll society that tracks and shares the most ridiculous articles you can find? Because I'm genuinely impressed at how many of these you can pump out between bans.

The ideal solution is to teach health and fitness from a young age. However the stuff they currently teach in school on nutrition is so ass backwards it does more harm than good.

Huh? I find interesting articles and some of them I post on here since I think people would like to comment on them. Is that a crime?

Substitute the instances of 'overweight / obese' in this article with 'poor' or '(pick any religion you like)' and lets see how the responses in this thread change. Lulz will be had.

You basically answered your own question. If you don't want to deal with the effects of becoming fat, then whip your ass into shape.

For what? All I did was post a thread about the negative experiences that go along with obesity. Isn't that worth discussing?

You mean to tell me that more than just obese women are discriminated against!?

Not sure what the issue is.
You'll be facing stigma no matter which body type you are - unless you're the "golden average".

I'm diagnosed with a gut disease that gives me chronic weight loss - quite the opposite of obesity.
I'm small, been called "sickly thin" throughout my entire life. Do I give a fuck? No!
I give them a snarky remark back, or tell my cry-me-a-river sob story if they're close. I work hard towards improving my body, and have learned to like it.

You either need to grow thicker skin and raise your chin more, or improve your body.
I do the former. Most undiagnosed people can do the ladder.
If neither you nor other people can be proud of your body - then it's not society's responsibility to consider you "beautiful". I don't want to be thin. Fat people shouldn't want to be fat either.

Weight-related stigmatization can take many forms, such as interpersonal (being ridiculed or shamed for your size), institutional (not getting a job or promotion because of your size), or physical barriers (not being able to find clothes that fit or chairs in theaters or restaurants that can accommodate your body).
Bolded is a bunch of drivel. What's next, tall people are "stigmatized" because they bonk their heads into doorframes more often?

I promise you, if he posted a study that said poor people were discriminated against because they couldn't fit in normal sized chairs, I'd be even more negative.

Meh, Cortana finds me articles related to articles I've read in the past, so it's not even really needed to seek out stuff.

As a large woman I havn't drawn a lot of hate for it--but realistically the only way I think you Really draw aggro in the world is by being an asshat. Maybe its just that I live in a smaller community or w/e, but generally if you're decent to people then you'll have decency come back to you. If people are rude to you based on how you look, then what is their respect worth anyway? What matters is if you're alright with yourself. Peace, all <3
