    Motherboard and Processor upgrade

    Hello!

    I currently own the following:
    AMD Phenom II X4 955 processor - http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AM...BGMBOX%29.html

    Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3 motherboard - http://www.pcgarage.ro/placi-de-baza...ga-ma770t-ud3/

and I'm planning to upgrade both as... well.. I would really like to profit from the free Windows 10 offer without worrying that in a few months I'll need to rebuy Windows 10. 2 birds at once so to say, I also upgrade and get Windows 10 for free.

Now, here's the catch. The two can't cost more than 350 euros in total and I need something that will last me at least 5 years (which is about what the current computer lasted me). Now, since I know prices are different in different countries, I live in Romania, so here's a site that sells processors and motherboards here:
    http://www.pcgarage.ro/procesoare/pagina3/ - processors
    http://www.pcgarage.ro/placi-de-baza/pagina7/ - motherboards

350 euros is roughly 1600 RON.

I mostly want this for gaming and programming + some video editing. I don't have a preference in Intel/AMD, if the difference is less than 10% but the price difference is 50+euros, I'll take the AMD.
Can you advise me please? What can I do?

Before I say anything, that website is aweful. But anyway, the 6600k and that motherboard should add up to nearly 1600 RON, or 350 Euro. Should last you a good 5 years.

    This 6600K.

Guys... If the OP is going for Skylake he would also need DDR4 memory. I assume he has a total budget of 350 euro (correct me if I am wrong).

So, you could either look into a 4690k + Z97 mobo and reuse your old DDR3 Ram. Or look for a i5 6400+B150/H110 mobo+ 8GB 2133Mhz RAM. Both should fit under the 350 euro/1600 RON.

    4690k + Z97 mobo

    Or

    6400
    + B150 mobo + DDR4

You will be able to OC the 4690k, which should give it an edge over the 6400.

The motherboard I linked uses DDR3.

Ah I missed that. I assumed it was a Z170 mobo, why would you otherwise take a 6600k.
That said, his RAM is most likely 1,5+ volt. I thought, skylake only really likes DDR3 RAM which uses less than 1.35 volts.

You should not buy a Z170 with DDR3. I would rather wait and save up another 80€ for the DDR4 RAM then. But you definitely need a OC'able CPU, if you want to keep it for longer.

You also need DDR3L for Z170-ddr3 boards, as Intel states that 1.5v memory can damage the IMC.

Thank you all for the replies until now, really appreciated

    So, a few questions:
    1. So, if I have DDR3 memory I can't use it for a DDR4 Motherboard? If so, I'd rather have a DDR3 support as I have 16 GB of RAM and can't replace now. I have this memory:

    Correct!

    3. I was looking at different processors, and I have a question, I saw some good looking Vishera AMD processors, but at memory frequency support it only says 1866. Does this means that it supports that and lower or just 1866? Because, having 1600 frequency for my memory, it would not work. Here's the comparison link:

If you want to reuse your RAM, I would go for the 4690k + Z97 combo I linked before.

As for your question, usually if it supports 1866 Mhz it will also support 1600.

You have the budget for skylake:

    i5 6500 - 1020 RON
    ASRock B150M Pro4S - 385RON
    2x4GB kingston DDR4 - 200RON
    Total 1605ron.

He wants to reuse his old RAM.
And the 4690K runs faster than the 6500 and has the option to OC...
